Dear Mary, Brendan and Andrew, Oliver just heard the news of Brian's passing and called from school to share this news. The Smuts' family is so sorry for your loss. Brian was a lovely man who was so selfless, esp. when it came to sharing his time with the kids sports. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I worked with Brian at TGaS, and he was always upbeat, always willing to help out, always doing the right thing. I'm so sorry to hear that this disease took him.

"To be, or to be" It was one of Brian's favorite sayings when I knew him during our years together in Delta Sigma Phi back at Duke. Brian was telling Dad jokes long before we ever knew what fatherhood was. One cannot think about Brian and not smile at those jokes, his laugh, a horrible red plaid sport coat he used to wear, and his enduring joy. He was truly a kind soul. My heart goes out to his family and those who were lucky enough to know him after he left Duke.

Mary , Jack and I love you like a daughter. Brian was an exceptional Husband and Father . His courage was amazing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time. Jack and Judy Flynn

My sincere condolences on Brian's passing. I worked with him for years @ TGaS Advisors and will remember him for his kindness the smile he had when we worked with colleagues and clients and the extra efforts he put into his work. He will be missed!

Brian was a true gentleman; kind to everyone, intelligent, funny, and a great father-I was blessed to know him. The trip we took to Ireland with your lovely family will always bring great memories. So sad he had to leave, praying for you all. Love, Brian, Erin and Jack.

Brian was a man of integrity, strength and kindness. I could see his love for his wife and boys. While I didn't know Brian as well as I wish I did, I am deeply saddened by him losing his battle to this terrible disease and know there is a huge hole in many people's lives without him and I pray for their healing.
