Brian Edward Fugate, age 69, of Des Moines, IA, formerly of Albia, IA, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Oakwood Specialty Care in Albia.

Brian was born on November 28, 1956, on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, one of six children born to Louis and Elizabeth Ann (Leevy) Fugate. He grew up attending school in Albia before enlisting in United States Air Force to serve his country. He later transferred to the United States Army and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Brian was united in marriage to Dorothy Howie and to this union, a daughter, Stephy Jo, was born. They later divorced. He was then married to Deloris Ball and they welcomed a son, Brian Jr.

Brian began his working years in construction before becoming an over-the-road truck driver, a career he enjoyed for more than 30 years. His worked allowed him to travel to every state in the country as well as many Canadian provinces.

A three-time cancer survivor, Brian was tough and had a heart of gold He had an infectious smile that could light up any room and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed get-togethers with friends and visiting over Budweisers and smokes. He especially enjoyed bringing his truck to family reunions to give everyone rides. Brian was also very talented, gifted with a great singing voice and loved singing to his daughter, Stephy Jo. He had a passion for politics and enjoyed hosting debate parties. Above all else, Brian cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, whom he adored.

Brian is survived by his daughter, Stephy Jo; his son, Brian (Hailey) Jr.; 5 grandchildren, Kaylee (with Brian's great grandchild on the way), Michael, Amira, Cassius, and Jude; and a sister, Linda Warren. Brian is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Liz Fugate; siblings, Barbara, Stephen, David, and Jeannie; a bonus brother, Dick Howie; a niece, Niki Hamblin; and a nephew, Dusty Fugate.

Per Brian's wishes, his body has been cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

An open memorial has been established to the family.
