Brian Lanigan

Brian Lanigan, of Freeport, ME, a beloved family man, friend and community leader unexpectedly passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, kindness and generosity. He was 68 years old.
Brian was born and raised in Concord, Massachusetts, where he grew up with a deep appreciation for his community and a commitment to excellence. He graduated from Concord-Carlisle High School, where he developed a strong foundation for his future success. It was during his junior year in high school that Brian met the love of his life, J.J., in Latin class. Their connection was immediate and they were happily married 45 years. Brian's academic journey continued at Bentley University for his undergraduate studies, followed by Babson College, where he earned his MBA. His education set the stage for a distinguished career in community banking.
In 1984, Brian joined Middlesex Savings Bank as one of its first commercial lenders. Over his 40+ year career at MSB, he made a significant impact on the bank and its people, retiring as the Chief Operating Officer in 2016 and most recently serving as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors. Brian's commitment to providing exceptional service, value to customers and communities remained a constant throughout his career, and his leadership played a key role in the bank's growth and success.
Outside of his professional accomplishments, Brian was deeply involved in his community. A longtime resident of Acton, MA, he devoted much of his time to serving local organizations. He was the president of the Acton Lions Club, a corporator for Emerson Hospital, and actively participated in the Massachusetts Bankers Association, as well as the American Bankers Association's Mutual Institutions Council. Brian also served as treasurer of the Concord Country Club, where he helped guide the club's financial stewardship with the same integrity and dedication that marked his professional life.
Brian had many passions outside of his professional and civic duties. He loved woodworking and spent countless hours creating beautiful pieces for his home and for others. Some of his most cherished memories were spent camping with his children and close family friends in Acadia National Park, skiing in Quechee, VT, as well as admiring sunsets over Lake Champlain. Brian was also an avid golfer, enjoying rounds with his buddies in Florida, where he embraced the joy of the game and the company of friends. One of his greatest joys in recent years was boating with his grandsons, Teddy and Oliver, on Casco Bay in Maine-moments he treasured deeply, creating special memories on the water as their Papa.
Brian's greatest joy, however, came from his family and the company of others. Those who knew him appreciated his warmth, generosity, and genuine care for those around him. Whether grilling by the pool during family gatherings or sharing a beer with friends, Brian had an extraordinary ability to make others feel valued and special. He cherished the simple moments that created lasting memories, and his sense of humor and infectious laughter could light up any space he entered.
A passionate mentor, Brian was always willing to lend a helping hand. He shared his knowledge, whether teaching how to carve a turkey at Thanksgiving or offering advice for gardening projects. He enjoyed bringing people together and making every moment count.
Brian's impact extended beyond the immediate circle of those who knew him. His professional success, combined with his strong sense of community, service and work ethic, made him a model of generosity and leadership. He was a true friend, a dedicated colleague, as well as a loving husband, father and Papa who will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Brian is survived by his wife, J.J. Lanigan, his two daughters, Megan Lanigan, and her partner Adam, and Molly Carr, and her husband George. His greatest pride were his two grandsons, Teddy and Oliver Carr, who brought him immeasurable joy each and every day.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Brian's life during visiting hours at Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord, MA on Thursday, March 13th from 4 to 7 pm. Brian's Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 14th at 10 am in St. Bernard's Church at Holy Family Parish, 12 Monument Square, Concord, MA. A private burial will follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord. The family encourages all who attend to consider wearing bright colors in Brian's honor. Brian's legacy will forever be remembered-a one-of-a-kind individual who embodied love, service and a life well-lived. He will be missed, but never forgotten.
