I was fortunate to have been a teammate of Brian's on the Brother Rice track team in 1974. Brian was an exceptional athlete in both football and track. He was awarded a football scholarship to Purdue. I did not play football at Rice and I am sure he was talented. However, I ran track for four years at Rice and he was the one of the best track athletes I have seen. Seeing Brian coming around the final turn in the 220 or 440 yard dash was a sight to behold. He ran phenomenally fast and somehow switch into a higher gear and pull away from all the other runners in the field. In the 440 during the last hundred yards most runners are desperately gasping for air and trying to maintain their speed. Brian actually ran faster at the end of the race. His kick was truly amazing. What was more amazing is that Brian was modest and self effacing. I never heard him brag about his accomplishments or trash talk any opponents. He always encouraged his teammates to do their best. His quiet leadership helped lead our team to the Chicago Catholic League Track championship in 1974.
I ran four years at Rice and never won one race. However, I am proud to say that I ran with one of the best. He taught me to always to give your best effort. Godspeed Brian.
Sincerely,
Mike Gallagher class of 1975
