I am a retired Army Nurse who took care of Brian when he was hospitalized with severe burns in 1974 at the Institute of Surgical Research in San Antonio, TX. I experienced him as a uniquely gifted man in his recovery "mission". I spent many evenings after my 3-11 pm shift sitting with Brian discussing what is really important in life. He taught me a lot about cherishing life. I feel blessed to have known him and will never forget his loving spirit.

just found out today, 2 years later that Mr Schul had passed...late condolences to all his family and friends, I never knew him or got to see him talk, but had read and watched a lot of his story over the years, what a amazing guy... funny, accomplished, and inspiring, a hero to many he never met, but left a great impression upon... we'll all meet someday, to say thank you.

I met Brian Shul while attending the Reno Air Races in 2009, way back when, with my girlfriend who is now my wife.
I saw his booth that said "Meet an SR-71 Pilot", and I just had to go over there.
Brian was just telling a live version of the LA Speed Check event. Everyone that listened laughed so hard.
Hearing him telling it live was priceless. He also told the story about dropping out of the clouds over an English AFB with the infamous fly-by for some colonel?'s retirement. Absolutely priceless.
I was lucky enough to shake his hand at the end and talk with him for a moment. I got to tell him that he flew the plane that I had admired since I can remember, and that it was that plane that got me interested in aviation and made me get my own Pilots License.
I literally just read that he has passed in 2023... and I am very sad now.
Rest in Peace, Brian...you have been an inspiration to me and will continue to be so.

Brian was a terrific fellow who answered all of my (unclassified) questions about the SR-71. Even though I never met him in person, he was a joy to talk with. I hope to finally meet him on the other side.

Would you please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of your loved one? Brian Shul has been an inspiration to me throughout both my aviation and my photography careers. When I needed inner strength, I turned to the inspiration of his motivational presentations and realised that I could accomplish my dreams. Brian has contributed so very much to the world and he will be deeply missed. When I watch the birds fly their aerobatic manoeuvres, I always think of him. May Brian rest in peace.

Brian - Thank you for your service and tremendous sacrifice. Thank you for taking the time to educate people about the importance of acting with passion. You make me proud to share membership with you as a USAF SAC Veteran. I’m certain that you are developing and still flying amazing craft on the other side. I hope to meet you over there when the time is right. Many continued blessings to you and your family.

Brian has been a Hero of mine for many years! I too was an Air Force member for 20 yrs, 11 months, and 25 days. - Aug 71 to Oct 92 - I was stationed in Thailand 72-73 not far from where Brian was shot down. My wife's favorite A/C was the SR-71. She said that she almost had one land on her car (as she and a friend) drove by the field on Okinawa, JA. It was one of the High points of her life, 1948-2023. High Flight can't hold a candle to Coralene's or Brian's flight path now. May God hold them both by the hand until the time is right!

I met Brian at the at Mather AFB in 1980 or 81. He had just come in from a test flight and we had a conversation about life in the Air Force and very briefly about what happened to him. He was captivating and humble and really loved flying.

Today I learned of Brians passing. I met him at the Cleveland Air Show when he flew A 10s. Years later I struck up a friendship at a wedding. He became a pen Pal. I still have the postcards he sent. What a beautiful soul he was. Fly high with the angles Brian.

I saw "Sled Driver" on the coffee table in the flight office where I worked. Every break from work would find me devouring every word and photo. I was thrilled when my bride gave me my own copy as a birthday present. I had previously worked with a former SR-71 crew chief. His stories (the non-classified ones) were always enthralling, and "Sled Driver" filled in so much more. Later I acquired an autographed copy of "The Untouchables" which I have read several times. I hope to pass Brian's stories to my grandchildren to inspire their lives as he has inspired me. Thus Brian's legacy will live on.

So sorry to hear of Brian's passing. We played racquetball two to three times a week at U-Dorn Thailand. Got to fly with him once (a thrill of my life). Not only was he a great person, but his skills of a pilot says it all. He loved life, his Lord, and now he's at peace with his Lord.

I was a Crew Chief @ Myrtle Beach AFB back in the day. I had the privilege to “strap him in & launch” on many missions in both A-7d’s & A-10a’s. We had the opportunity to converse, last, in ‘21. He was highly respected by all the ground crew. A great guy who will be missed greatly. I could identify him on the flight line by his swagger long before I could see his face. I’ll see you on the other side Brother. Cheers.

I knew Captain Shul when he was a Military Assistance Program instructor pilot with the 3389th Pilot Instructor Squadron at Keesler AFB, MS being only an Airman on the Aircrew Life Support team. We trained Vietnamese, Thai, and Cambodian pilots during the war. He was the friendliest of customer pilots with a fantastic sense of humor. After his fateful crash and recovery, I was fortunate to meet him again as an NCO telling his story at Randolph AFB, TX. I was so proud and elated that he remembered me. RIP HABU...Bravo Zulu.

I met Brian at an egret sanctuary in Florida, each with our Nikons in hand. We started a conversation, and found out that we lived just a few communities apart. I had no idea who he was, or anything about his flying career. When he gave me his email address, I thought he was a musher in Alaska! He set me straight.
We kept in touch over the years, checking in with photography spots that were "hot". I shared a kestrel nesting site with him, and we spent many afternoons out at Black Butte Lake, taking photos of the family of four youngsters. He had a wicked sense of humor, and he would compare the flights of various birds to different planes he had flown. When I found out this morning that Brian had passed, I could do nothing but burst into tears. What a loss for the world!

A brilliant man who I met at the Dayton/ Wright Pat air show years ago. I purchased his Sled Driver coffee table book. He signed it and even though he just met me, he then invited me to join him and his friends for dinner. Dinner conversation was amazing and I will never forget the American Hero who touched my life even for a short time. A very nice, caring and sharing man. He will be sorely missed by many.

We have lost a heroic warrior and a great resource to our aviation history.
Rest in Peace Major Shul, HABU SALUTE !!!
High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things. You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace where never lark nor ever eagle flew—And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space. I put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
Poem By John Gillespie

to him to ask if he would phone a young man I knew who was close to earning his Air Force wings when he was stricken by cancer and grounded. I asked Brian if he would call the young man to try to cheer him up by relating about the obstacles he had overcome. Brian gladly did this very kind gesture. Rest In Peace, Brian.

I was shocked and saddened when I learned of Brian passing.
Brian was an incredible inspiration to aviators around the world and to corporate groups he spoke to about drive and success!!
I met Brian at a book signing at the Puyallup, WA Annual NORTHWEST Aviation Conference and quickly became friend's, he flew SR-71s with 2 of my college classmates, we had many phone chats, he was fascinated about my stories and encounters with Bald Eagles, and had a deep desire to get close to photograph them. His incredible photography is truly an expression of his intelligence and enthusiasm for life!! He is truly soaring with the eagles now, he will be missed!!

We have been blessed by the presence and soul of a great, gifted man. That soul has now gone way past 90,000 feet and is joining his beloved family in heaven. He is seeing planets and stars in a way he never saw before. If only he could write to us now and describe it as only he could. As much as I feel the loss of him and his many gifts, I don’t want to focus on that loss. Brian Shul brought his world to all of us in his unique way. I always told him I never knew a better writer and I will grieve the books he could have still written, but I will brush that aside to focus only on the positive. Please honor Brian’s life by thinking how he added to your life and made it better. He always said he wanted to be an educator about Nature and the beauty it had in store for each of us if only we would go out and see it. There will undoubtedly be opportunities to honor him through charitable donations, scholarships, and other ways. For now, I wish you would take a moment to step outdoors and look up. Our Brian is flying with his Eagles.

Having known you for 12 years it’s hard to believe you are gone after just seeing you and being together in Tucson last early October.
I remember meeting you in Marysville at Gallery One and having lunch at the Brick restaurant a month after my wife passed away back in May 2017.
I’ll miss all our calls, e mails and get togethers.
I know you’re in heaven flying with God.
I will pray for you Brian.
I love you.
Peace forever.

Brian was my hero as a little girl! I first met him at the Akron Air show where my dad was the director. He would have Brian back every year with his A 10 demonstration. I was drawn to him even as a little girl. I still have a little Mickey Mouse bank that he brought me one year and he said he would "wave" to just me as he flew in and out of the show with his A 10.
I still have that memento in my memory box from over 40 years ago! Brian would write me little letters and stay in touch over the years and eventually lost touch. But, one day when I was just 25 with my first daughter, my dad said lets go to the Cleveland Air show. As we were walking in, I recognized Brian immediately and tears streamed from my face. He remembered me and my family and he was able to meet my oldest daughter. What an absolute blessing to see him again!
My parents always had a photo of Brian hanging in their home. My dad was also a Vietnam Vet and retired as an E9 and there was just the greatest connection between those 2. When my parents passed, one of my greatest treasures is to have Brian's book "Sled Driver", ammo from his A 10 and that photo!
I remember writing papers on Brian in Highschool and College and sharing a real life hero and his story. To this day, when I see an A 10 (my favorite jet of all time) I see Brian and just get the biggest thrill.
What a shock to hear of his passing, but what a life he had!!! You will always be remembered! Know that my dreams did come true and I did believe hard things were possible and you were one of the reasons I did strive for excellence.
A hero among the clouds and well deserved rest!
All my love and highest regard,

Brian told me, since there wasn't a next generation in his family, he was afraid no one would remember him after he died. As long as freedom-loving Americans read, how can we not cherish the stories of this American Hero?! A life well-lived, sir! Condolences to Maureen Shul, his sister, and Col. Walter Watson, his SR-71 backseater (please write a book! Please include the fly-by for the flight cadets at the abandoned English air base. Thank you!)

We were priviledged to spend an afternoon with Brian at his gallery in Marysville in 2021 and were awed to see his high quality photos of birds he delighted in. He matched photos of the SR-71 with heroic music he had chosen in a video. We sat on his couch and chatted over an hour as he told us stories, then he walked us out to our car as a gentleman would. The world is now short another Hero. I am comforted that Brian believed in Jesus so we will see him again.

I had the pleasure and pain of getting to know Brian in England when he used to rotate through Mildenhall with the Blackbird. In 1985, together we won the British Open racquetball doubles championship. That was the pleasure part. The pain was that I took only second place in the singles championship. You guessed it, behind Brian. What a humbling experience to be bested by a man 3 years older and having gone through what he did. First-class athlete and a first-class individual. Early one morning he did a wing wag on take-off for me. I was astonished how almost imperceptible it was. But oh, that sound and that visual; stunning. We did not stay connected as much as I would have liked. I will miss you, Brian, you were an inspiration.
