Brian A. Shumaker, 74 a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his residence in Monaca on Friday, October 20, 2023. Born in Rochester, PA, Brian was known for his friendly demeanor, his love for his family, and his unwavering dedication to his country.
Brian was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Ruth Shumaker, and his brother-in-law, Ray Sullivan. He is survived by his loving wife, Janet L. Sullivan Shumaker, and their children: Marcie (Chris) Crawford, Brian Shumaker (Darla Butcher), James (Kelli) Antinopoulos, Kristen Apple (Brian Berchtold), Josh (Patricia) Antinopoulos, and Beka (Todd) Weischedel. He was a proud grandfather to fourteen grandchildren: Maddie, Leah, Megan, Lindsay, A.J., Mara, Avie, James, Lucas, Robbie, Sam, Harper, Molly and Ripley and a great-grandfather to Rylan. Brian is also survived by his brothers, Scott (Sheila) Shumaker and James (JoAnn) Shumaker, his brother-in-law David (Lorie) Sullivan, and his sisters-in-law, Carol Sullivan and Angela Sullivan. He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and a close-knit group of special friends, including Brandon Apple, Don and Denise Lynch, Chuck and Louise Greback, and the special Atlantic Avenue Crew who were like family.
A graduate of Monaca High School, class of 1967, Brian's life was marked by service and dedication. He was a Vietnam Veteran, having enlisted in the U.S Army and served with the First Calvary. For his bravery and service, he was awarded the Purple Heart Medal and a Bronze Star. Upon returning from war, Brian worked for J & L / LTV Steel's Aliquippa works for 33 years. He also held positions at Roger's Custom Shop in Monaca and Halama Brothers Electric, ultimately ending his work career as an electrician for Union Local 712 with 10 years of service.
Brian was well-known and liked within his community. He had a zest for life and was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends. He loved his yearly camping trips to Kinzua and his fishing trips to Canada with his buddies. However, his greatest joy was being a proud Pap, and he cherished his role as the overseer of Pap Camp for his grand kids. He frequently referred to his home as the "HUB" for all family events and holidays, a testament to his love for family gatherings and celebrations.
Brian A. Shumaker will be remembered as a man of great character, a devoted family man, a brave veteran, and a kind friend.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, October 24th from 2- 8 pm at SIMPSON FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Avenue, Monaca (724 728 4000) where relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service on Wednesday at 10 am. Interment with full military honors will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery at 10:50am.
The family has suggested memorial contributions be made, if desired in Brian's memory to a charity of the donor's choice
