Bridget Ann Birmingham
Bridget "Bridie" Ann (Lavelle) Birmingham, 87, of Enfield, beloved wife of the late John "Jackie" Birmingham, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2025.
Born in Leam, Belmullet, County Mayo, Ireland on January 11, 1938, daughter of the late John and Julia (Gaughan) Lavelle, she was raised on the family farm in Leam and attended local schools. Following the untimely passing of her mother in 1955, Bridget took on many responsibilities and chores at home on the farm. After completing school, she worked at the Ellie Bay Toy Factory before immigrating to the United States in 1958.
Upon her arrival, she lived with her aunt and uncle, Mary and Pat Cadigan, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, and after six months with her cousin Eleanor and family in the Bronx, New York. During that time, she worked as a waitress in Manhattan before returning to Holyoke when her father and 4 younger brothers immigrated. In Holyoke, she was employed at Prost and Liberty Bakeries, where she enjoyed her work and developed lifelong friendships within her extended American family.
On June 19, 1965, Bridget married John "Jackie" Birmingham in Holyoke, and the couple began their married life in Hartford before settling in Enfield, where they raised their family and made their home for the next fifty-six years. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Bridget's life was centered on faith, family, and community, which was a very important part of her life. She was a parishioner of St. Jeanne Jugan Parish (Holy Family Church) and was actively involved in her children's school and athletic activities.
Bridget found her greatest joy in time spent with family and friends. She cherished family gatherings and took great pride in watching her children, and in her later years, her grandchildren participate in hockey, baseball, softball, lacrosse, Irish dancing, and cheerleading. Her warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Patrick ( Bridget) Birmingham of Ellington, CT; John (Jill) Birmingham of Enfield, CT; and Kathleen (Tim) Miller of Bethel, CT; her cherished grandchildren, Nora, Catherine, Brendan, Emma, Michaela, Thomas (T.J.), and Dennis; and her brothers, Michael (Eileen) Lavelle of West Yarmouth, MA, Patrick Lavelle of Holyoke, MA, and Jack (Mary) Lavelle of Addison, TX.
She also leaves her brothers-in-law, Joseph Cawley of Bristol, England; James Birmingham of West Hartford, CT; Hubert (Kit) Birmingham of County Galway, Ireland; and her sister-in-law, Margaret Lavelle of Holyoke, MA, along with several cousins, nieces, and nephews in the United States, Ireland, and England. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother Edward Lavelle; her brother-in-law Michael Birmingham; and her sisters-in-law Elizabeth Birmingham, Evelyn Cawley, and June Birmingham.
