Lindquist Mortuary - LaytonBrigitte Fitzgerald, a beloved wife, mother, Omi, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on March 14, 2026. Born on June 15, 1945, in Hof/Saale, Germany, Brigitte was the cherished daughter of Richard and Maria Leithmann.
In 1965, Brigitte married the love of her life, Joseph F. Fitzgerald of Melrose, Massachusetts, whom she met while he was assigned at Hof Air Station. Their enduring partnership took them on a remarkable 16-year journey with the U.S. Air Force, living in Germany, Italy, Turkey, Texas, New Mexico, and ultimately, Utah. Together, they built a loving family, raising three devoted children: Sandra (Matthew), Richard (Cheryl), and Raymond (Carola). Brigitte’s gentle spirit and unwavering support touched not only her immediate family but also her nine precious grandchildren and her extended family in Germany, including her sister Irma, nieces Sylvia and Christina, and nephew Dennis.
As a military spouse Brigitte ensured the day-to-day household activities along with raising three rambunctious children was always her first priority. The many international moves along with the cross-country road trips provided many challenges but also great memories. Brigitte’s passion for fashion found a joyful outlet in her work as a sales associate at the Hill AFB BX beginning in 1980. She delighted in helping others look and feel their best, always offering her keen eye for style and a warm smile to colleagues and customers alike. After retiring in 1996, Brigitte embraced her love of the outdoors, traveling to Yellowstone annually, and hiking the beautiful mountain trails of Northern Utah, including Adams Canyon, Snowbasin, and the Liberty area. In 2011, Brigitte’s deep devotion to her family was exemplified as she became Joe’s full-time caretaker, lovingly ensuring they could remain together at home. Following Joe’s passing in 2022, Brigitte found joy in managing her home, gardening, hiking, Facebook and shopping for those good sales.
Brigitte’s greatest pride and joy was always her family. She delighted in sharing stories of her children’s successes and adventures. Brigitte cherished every moment spent watching her grandchildren grow into remarkable young adults, finding immense happiness in celebrating each of their achievements. She treasured the warmth and laughter of family gatherings—holidays, birthdays, graduations—knowing these special occasions fostered memories and strengthened the family bonds she held so dear. Through all of life’s chapters, it was her family’s togetherness that filled her heart with the deepest joy and gratitude.
Brigitte will be fondly remembered for her kindness, her zest for life, and her unwavering dedication to the people she held dear. She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength, and she will remain forever in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
