I arrived on campus 1968 about 3 days early for band tryouts and practice. I was a little scared and excited, didn't even know about shaved heads and didn't know much about Clemson (long story). Dr. Cook was WONDERFUL! He was calm, seemed a little nervous, was very nice and was not loud or intimidating. His nervousness made you realize that he felt pressure that every performance go well. I remember feeling that I wanted to please him and that he would help me if I ever needed it. You remember people like Dr. Cook because they are great leaders and kind. The Tiger Band was a place, a haven, professional, an honor to be a member of, a source of pride to be a part of Death Valley and to this day, Dr. Cook stands out in my memory as special! I hope they have great music in heaven Bruce.

I was a trombone player in the Tulia, texas band from 1961 to 1965. Bruce Cook was a major influence in my life during those years. So sorry to hear of his passing.

As a 1968 graduate of Tulia High School I remember both Mr Cook and Miss Elkins with such fond memories. Rest in peace Dr. Cook and condolences to the family. Being a member of the award winning Tulia High School band is among my fondest High School memories. Reading about all of his success in Clemson is not surprising as he was incredibly gifted in music and leadership.

I lived in awe of this man who could corral over 300 students on game day Saturday's, deliver a flawless performance, then come home to his family, offering them the same attention and love that he showed for his students. Because of dad, I know how to repair things around the house, how to manage my finances, how to care for my spouse. And, though some might mistake his kind, gentle, humble spirit for weakness, just talk to the thousands of former students, all of whom saw him as a gentle giant, but powerful and inspirational leader. While I will never be able to match his legacy, he has given me something to strive for. All sons and daughters should be so lucky.

Sad Clemson Tiger, with band helmet and Bruce Cook's initials on it.

It was a pleasure to be in Tiger Band from 1985-1988 under Dr. Cook's direction. I have never known anyone else who could manage to get over 300 college students quiet and listening all at once. He had an enormous kind and gentle heart to put up with all of our diverse personalities and get to know each and every one of us as individuals. May God bless all the Cook family members.

I remember Bruce Cook as being a very kind and gentle soul as well as an inspiration to all of us in the Tulia High School Band. I fondly remember the romance that blossomed between Bruce and Pat and thought they were somewhat magical. I feel so blessed to have known "Mr. Cook" and I truly admired him.

Pat,
It seems like just last year that you and Bruce came to Clemson to help with Tiger Band. I so remember your first "road trip" with the band, experiencing those crazy TB members "on the road" (we had been well trained by John Butler!). I treasure our memories together during your first years before my graduation. I kept up with you and Bruce all through the years from a distance while in the Air Force, but always with fond memories of our times together.
I was so saddened to hear of Bruce's illness just last week and then of his passing today. He was a great man and did so much for CU. He will be sorely missed.
All our love to you and the family.

Mr. Cook was my inspiration, my role model, and my dear friend. It was largely due to his influence on my life that I spent 29 years on the podium as a high school band director. I will never forget this kind, musical genius.

Pat, I am so sorry about Bruce. You and I and Bruce and Marie went back a long way. You and Bruce long were a major part of my life. I am sad that too many years have passed since we have been reacquainted. I will never forget Bruce. I regret that I was not able to be at the Memorial service for him since I have been ill.

I started band under Mr. Cook in 1963. He strongly encouraged me to play clarinet, and some 50+ years later, I still do. He certainly was born to teach, and I consider myself fortunate to have been one of his students. My condolences to his family.

I was never fortunate enough to know him as teacher & mentor. He was the father of my childhood best friend, Heather. The Cook home is clearer in my memory than my own home, largely to his & Mrs. Pat's willingness to have my brother & I invade their home. They were my second family in the way that can happen only in the magic of childhood. I am so sorry for the loss for this wonderful family.

I was honored to be in Tiger Band and Concert Band during Mr. Cook's first four years at Clemson from 1967-1971. He lived an exemplary Christian life in word and deed through encouragement and skill as a musician and teacher. The world is better because of him.
My prayers are for his family and many friends. May God bring comfort and peace to you all.

Just sent a card, but wanted to emphasize how much I loved working with Bruce, his son Aaron, his wife Pat, and his son Tim. The love he had for the community was only eclipsed by the love he showed his family and his school. He made everything better, and he exemplified what it meant to be a good professor and leader. I know he will be missed. All of the Charney's send their love and condolences.

My condolences to the Cook family. What I remember most about Dr. Cook was his kindness and that he was always in good spirits. I very much enjoyed listening to him recall life on the farm from his youth. It was an honor to be in the band under his direction. May God bless you sir.

Extending sympathy to the entire Cook family and Clemson family. What a great man he was, always smiling, kind and gentle -- when he had every right to be a complete nervous wreck when it came to the crew of Tiger band members he was leading when I as a part of Tiger band. I only remember those days fondly and alot of it had to do with him as a leader. He not only was an incredible music talent but just an outstanding man who worked to instill the love of music, love of people and love of Clemson into those of us who were fortunate to be a part of his band programs. I am sure it has been a difficult year for all of you who have provided care for him but my prayer is that not only he is at peace but so are you knowing the life that he led and the inspiration he was to so many of us. Love to all --

I would like to send my condolences to the family. I was in Tiger Band from 1987-1991 (Tuba Section) and had the honor of getting to know Dr. Cook. He was a very caring and kind man that managed to make everyone feel at ease. He also had the ability to get the undivided attention of over 300 college students instantly with 1 “Damnit band”. It only took 1. I will never forget the time he made the band stop in the middle of “Tiger Rag” at practice to have just the tuba players play our part. We glanced at each other and without a word played it the way it was written. He said “No. Play it the way you were playing it”. We did and he said “That does sound better”. He never mentioned it again. He will be missed.

Pat and Family, I was sorry to hear of Bruce's death. What a gentle caring man he was. He leaves a great legacy - in the Brooks Center, the many lives he touched in his students, and in the goodness he projected to anyone who knew him. He and all of you will be in my prayers in the coming days.

Wishing the entire Cook family heartfelt sympathy in the loss of this great man. My father was a strong supporter of Dr. Cook when he was the Provost at the university and I had the great enjoyment of being a Tiger Band member. His life was rich and full and so many of us benefitted from his spirit, musicality, his kindness, and his dedication to learning. May he be at peace and memories for all of you help during this sad time.

Bruce was one of the kindest, gentle men I was blessed to know. He never had anything but a smile to acknowledge friends. As teachers of his children over the years, it was evident that they had great parental guidance. Pat and Bruce were great examples of top notch, caring parents. His music legacy will not be forgotten in the Clemson world. Our prayers are with the family as they remember the good times with him.

My deepest sympathy and condolences belong to the entire Cook family as well as Bruce's extended Tiger Band Family. I feel so very fortunate to have known Bruce and so blessed to be a Tiger Band member during some of his significant contributions to Clemson University, the Music Department and Band programs. Bruce's legacy will live on and I shall always think of Bruce with each and every Tiger Band performance. To Bruce's family, my prayers are that, while you will miss him tremendously, you will find strength and comfort in the fact that Bruce provided such a positive influence on me and so very many students and friends of Clemson.

Dr. Cook was Director of Bands at Clemson University while my dad was Choir Director there. I remember fondly handing out at Tiger Band practices as a kid. I also remember him giving me a horn so that I could go to college at UGA even though we had not been able to get a horn yet. I was later able to pass that horn onto a student of mine who needed it.
He is one of the people of my childhood that WAS Clemson for me. I'm sure I'm not the only one!
