Bruce Guy Hines, age 94, passed away on February 5, 2025, in Yakima, Washington. Bruce was born in Elgin, Illinois, on February 4, 1931, to his parents, Guy and Gladys Hines. They stayed in the Elgin and Peoria area, until they moved to Yakima, when he was 12 years old, so Guy could take a job at Hanford.
Bruce attended school at Davis High School and YVCC.
In March 1951, he joined the United States Air Force, and after boot camp was sent to Germany to serve until 1954. He met his wife, Barbara, while in Germany and she followed him back to Yakima. They were married for 70 years.
He worked as a carpenter, building houses and at Priest Rapids Dam, during its construction. Their two children, Scott and Linda, were born during this time.
Bruce joined the Yakima Fire Department in 1957, and served for 32 years, rising up the ranks to become Battalion Chief for 14 years. He was in charge of 14 major alarms and was very proud of his crews success.
Bruce and Barbara had many wonderful friends. They played golf for over 50 years at the Yakima Elks Club. Bruce won low gross in the State Elks Championship and kept the trophy in their living room.
They also loved to play bridge with their friends on a regular basis. He also liked to go hunting, fishing, and river rafting with Scott and Karin.
Bruce felt very fortunate to have a great family, which included his son, Scott (Karin), daughter, Linda (Jerry), and grandson, Captain Cedric Bruce Hines, U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Barbara, sister, Carol and her three children, Beth, Eric, and Mike, his sister-in-law, June, and her three children, Jeffery, Angela, and Janelle.
We would like to thank the staff of Avamere Englewood and Cresent Care, and Landmark. The family would also like to thank Dr. Ho, who was his longtime doctor.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 11:00am, at Shaw & Sons Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Yakima Elks, at 1:00pm.
