Bruce Slack Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Grace Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home - Hudson on Dec. 11, 2025.
Bruce Martin Slack, Sr., a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully, at the astounding age of 100, leaving a legacy of kindness, dedication, and love. His journey through life was marked by deep compassion, unwavering commitment to his family, and a steadfast work ethic admired by all who knew him.

Born in Zarephath, N.J. on August 16, 1925, Bruce grew up surrounded by the values of hard work and integrity. He was the beloved son of Wesley L. Slack and Ethel B. Slack, who instilled in him the importance of faith, community and generosity. As a young man, Bruce was an excellent student, learned to be a pilot, and served his country in the army Air Corp. He spent over 34 years as an IBM employee first repairing the early computers and then writing instruction and maintenance manuals for those machines. He enjoyed doing his own auto maintenance, flying a small plane, vegetable gardening, camping, hiking, and traveling around the US and parts of Europe. He was a charter member of the Poughkeepsie New Yorkers, a barbershop choral group which won the district championship and came in 6th at the St. Louis national convention in 1969.

Above all, Bruce was devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving children, Sherry Milliken, Cathy Rohling, Mary Lou Sussmeier, his namesake Bruce Martin Slack, Jr., his twelve grandchildren; Leah Roofner, Kara Bartsch, Timothy and Joshua Slack, Gregory Simerson, Annalisa Ortiz, Peter Rohling, Sophia Rohling, Thomas Rohling, David Milliken, Cole Sussmeier and Kyle Sussmeier who brought him immeasurable joy. He also has ten beautiful great-grandchildren: Mikayla Roofner, Logan Roofner, Kiley Bush, Blake Slack, Alayna Slack, Allie Slack, Haillie Slack, Franklin Milliken, George Milliken and Makenzie Bartsch.

Bruce was preceded in death by Clara V. Slack, his wife of nearly 70 years, and his daughter, Lisa C. Palmateer. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His wisdom, warmth, and generous spirit will live on in the memories of those he touched.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Bruce's life at a memorial service to be held on January 9th, 2026, at 1PM at Grace Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home in Hudson, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Tunnel to Towers Foundation in Bruce's honor.

Bruce Martin Slack, Sr. will be remembered for his devotion to family, his strength of character, and his enduring impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in peace.
