Bruce E. Somers, age 77, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Saratoga Hospital, with his loving family by his side. Bruce was born on July 3, 1947, in Schenectady, NY and was the son of the late Frank and Helena (Gerard) Somers.
Bruce graduated from Mont Pleasant High School, where he was an incredibly accomplished swimmer. He later attended SUNY Brockport, earning his bachelor's degree in English. After college, Bruce joined the NY Reserves. Bruce went on to enjoy a long and fulfilling career in editing and proofing, with G.E. in Schenectady. Prior to this time, Bruce worked as a timekeeper in auditing for the Division of Youth, in Albany.
Along the way, Bruce met his beloved wife, the late Bonnie, and the two were wed on June 12, 1971. Some of Bruce's fondest memories were made while traveling with Bonnie to visit locations, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Vermont. The two also shared a great love for animals, caring for their cherished cats and dogs over the years. Bruce was also an avid musician, honing his special talent of playing the accordion from a young age.
Bruce is survived by his sister-in-law Joy (Brian) Pratt; his brother-in-law Berten Walker; his niece Diana (Frank) Alfano; and his cousins Michael (Sheila) Gerard, David (Sally) Gerard, Jerry (Donna) Gerard, Kris (Doug) Brown, and Patricia Cudmore.
In addition to his parents, Bruce is preceded in death by his wife Bonnie S. Somers, his sister Barbara Walker, his niece Lisa Cesare, and his cousin Elizabeth Hunt.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Monday, August 19, 2024, from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM, at Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home, 21 Midline Road, Ballston Lake, NY.
Interment will follow at 1:30 PM, at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Colonie, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to ASPCA, P.O. Box 96929, Washington, DC 20090-6929.
