Bud was the best coach when he was in Winnipeg. I had the chance to meet
him and he was kind and thoughtful. I was a young football player and he gave me some good advice (play the game, do your best but just enjoy the sport)! He will be missed! Thanks Bud!

We live in Wisconsin but have been Viking fans. My 2 sons learned about Bud Grant and Purple People Eaters thru my experiences growing up in the twin cities. My youngest son asked if he could skip school to meet Bud Grant on his birthday at his garage sale. Bud signed a few artifacts and was very nice to my son. He enjoyed it s much, we met Bud 3 consecutive years at his garage sale. After this picture my little guy said "Dad - he sure had a strong grip on my neck"

When I worked at Costco many years ago as a “sample lady” he stopped to get a sample. Being a bit naive and not recognizing him I said “ has anyone ever told you that you look like Bud Grant?” He smiled and said “ I hear that quite often”. I went on to tell him what a compliment it was to be compared to Bud Grant. It wasn’t until later I was told that WAS him!!! The following week when he came by I teased him and told him “the gig was up and I knew who he was “!! He came by my cart every week until I left and we would chat.it was fun to see customers approach him and acknowledge their respect for him! He was a gracious, humble and kind man who was loved by so many! A life well lived. Rest In Peace! You made us all proud!

Vikings 35-Chiefs 10, 1974, Arrowhead Stadium, I shook his hand after the game, congratulated him for the game & good luck in the playoffs. His team was walking across the field to their locker room after the game.

My dad had season tickets to Met stadium. I was just a kid and he would take me. I watched Bud coach our team , the standing at attention for the National Anthem , Fran Tarkenton and the our defense the front four. We wore snowmobile suits. I will never forget those memories. My dad is now 88 and still watches every year.Thanx for the memories and my condolences to your family.

Bud Grant was and will always be my hero. I have been a fan my entire life. I was born in 1965 and been watching the Vikings since I was 3. He was the epitome of what a coach should be. I cried when he retired but I knew it was to have more time for fishing and hunting and knew he would be able to relax and enjoy life. Then he CAME back for a year because we needed his wisdom and drive to get us back on track.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends...I lost a hero but you lost so much more. He will always be in my heart and you all will be in my prayers. God needed a true football coach so he needed to give him his purple and gold wings so he could do his magic in heaven. My thoughts and prayer to a man that will always be my hero.

Bud Grant was a great coach and a much-respected man during his many years on Planet Earth. He loved the game of football and also had a unique impact upon those players who would call him “coach.” I thank the Lord for the eleven years I had while playing football for him — during that time I enjoyed his leadership and the significant influence that he had on my life. May he Rest In Peace.

With much appreciation

An exceptional coach that cared about the players, not just the game. He had a great career with the Vikings. Heartfelt condolences to the Grant family, praying that God help you as you endure your time of loss.

Coach Grant was a highly principled man of exemplary character. A versatile professional-caliber champion athlete in his younger years, who subsequently became a Hall of Fame coach. Much beloved and respected, especially by his former players; he was truly one of the great leaders in sports' history.

Thank you for setting, and demonstrating, examples that were models for excellence, fortitude, and nobility, Coach. And for your service to our country. We loved, and looked up to, you.

As a close childhood friend of the Grants in Winnipeg during the 1960s, particularly of Peter and Michael, I was saddened to hear of Mr. Grant's passing. In addition to following his career with the Vikings I have held on to many memories of those early days, the most important being the times Bud would take time out of his busy schedule to "run plays" with us boys in the front yard of their home a block down from ours. What a thrill! My condolences go out to Peter, Michael and all the Grant family at this sad time.

As an elementary school and middle school aged child in the 1970s growing up in South Florida, everyone rooted for the Dolphins. I did not want to be like everyone else. So, I chose the team with the coolest uniforms (The Vikings of course) to be my adopted team. I emulated the famed Purple People Eaters, and I loved Coach Grant's toughness with the cold weather. I have wonderful, vivid memories of watching Viking games on TV. The old Metropolitan Stadium was an icon to me. I always admired Coach Grant's professionalism and that fact that he clearly commanded the respect of his great players. Thank you for being an amazing ambassador for the sport of football and for the Vikings and for the State of Minnesota. Well played, sir. R.I.P and sincere condolences to Mr. Grant's family, friends, and former players.
