Bunny Moses Obituary

Bunny (Blanche) Moses, wife to Leonard Moses for 56 years and mother to Debra and Joel Moses, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY. She was 87 years old. Born May 31,1935 in the Bronx, Bunny trained at Albany State Teachers College, where she met friends who quickly became family, and whose love she cherished for a lifetime. She spent 35 years as a high school teacher– primarily of American and European history, but also Asian and African history. Driven by a desire to bring history alive for her students, she invited guest lecturers into her classrooms who brought their stories of traveling the globe, and illustrated these with art, slides and experiences with the people they encountered. Current events were an important part of her curricula. While she was known for being "strict,"she often heard from students– even decades later, expressing how much she had taught them and how much they appreciated her. She taught for most of her career at Scotia Glenville High School after starting at Schalmont, and also spent time as a substitute teacher at Linton High in Schenectady, NY. Bunny also chaperoned groups of high schoolers to various countries in Europe for two week trips– so they could learn about foreign cultures, customs and people. The trips helped them recognize that in many ways, all peoples of the world had more in common than they did differences. Bunny served as an American Field Service (AFS) leader and faculty advisor. This program allowed students from foreign countries the opportunity to spend a year in the U.S., and provided the opportunity for American students to spend time with a foreign family abroad. She encouraged Debra and Joel to become AFS Exchange students: Debra spent a summer with a family in Brazil and learned Portuguese. Joel spent a summer in Israel. Bunny also fostered in her children a life-long appreciation of books, culture, theater and the arts. After she retired, Bunny became an antiques dealer, and later a vintage postcard dealer. What continually drove her was her love of learning– "something new every day," she would say. Bunny is survived by her daughter Debra Moses (Jaime Tannenbaum, MD), son Joel Moses MD (Julie Moses), grand daughter Katie, cousin Allen Brown and his children and nephews Ricki and Larry Finkel. A celebration of her life is planned for next Spring. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donations to the Niskayuna Jewish Community Center in Schenectady, or animal shelter/rescue organizations.

Deb, I remember your Mom very well from High School, even though I never had her as a teacher. All the best, and I will never forget the chance to meet with you on the flight from Philadelphia to San Francisco. One of the most pleasurable conversations, and I wish you and your family the best during the saddest of times. My heartfelt condolences.

I recall Mrs. Moses from High School, although I did not attend her class.

She was known as an outstanding teacher and mentor to many-my condolences to her family and especially Deb. I was fortunate to cross paths with her daughter Deb meeting her on a flight several years back while traveling to San Francisco. I recall talking about her Mom and family. It was one of the most delightful 4 hours of conversation while traveling.

I wish your family well in this challenging time.

I only recently learned of Mrs Moses' passing and was saddened by the news. I extend my sincere condolences to her family.
She was my HS social studies teacher and while some may have been relieved to find themselves assigned to another class to avoid the "tough" teacher, I was glad to have class with Mrs Moses. I appreciated her reading list (I remember, "The Pearl" and "Black Like Me", in particular,) and the fact that she was no-nonsense but at the same time, her enthusiasm for her subject matter kept me engaged.
I'm thankful that I had the good fortune to have crossed paths with Mrs Moses, if only for a relatively brief time, and had the opportunity to learn from her. May she rest in peace.

So sorry to hear of Bunny´s passing. I remember her as a lovely lady who was highly intelligent. She went to many antique shows & had extensive collections, particularly postcards. She was kind, thoughtful, & helpful. May her memory be a blessing.
