Burneda Mallard Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Johnson-Williams Funeral Home on Mar. 2, 2026.
Burneda Janice Hicks Mallard, 99, of Newbern, Tennessee, passed away on February 28, 2026, at Oakwood Community Living Center in Dyersburg, Tennessee.

Born August 15, 1926, in Obion County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Jim Hicks and Roxie Marie Davis Hicks.

She was known to all as Mom Bur. She lived a life defined by love, faith, and devotion to her family. She spent many years working at Trimble Manufacturing and later at Morris Glove Factory until her retirement. She was known for her strong work ethic, which she demonstrated in every part of her life. She was a proud member of Center Methodist Church for 69 years.

She was a devoted wife to the love of her life, Wayne Allen Mallard, for 62 years. Together they loved putting up a garden and never missed a season. They loved fishing at the lake and sharing a good crappie fish fry.

She was a loving and proud mother to Anita Thomas (Stan) and Mike Mallard (Pam). Her children and their families were her greatest joy. The values she lived by - faith, hard work, kindness, and devotion - are reflected in each of them.

She was a proud grandmother to Kristi Getson (Scott), David Scott Thomas (Nicky), and Shanna Demoss (Andrew), and a cherished great-grandmother to Matt Getson and Luke Getson; Evan Thomas (Jesye) and Ty Thomas; and Braxton Demoss, Hallie Demoss, and Brayden Demoss. Each held a special place in her heart.

She was famous for her biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, banana bread, and strawberry jelly. She was always sharing what she made with the people she cared about. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch, drinking coffee, and visiting with friends and neighbors. Being outdoors was one of her favorite pastimes - whether tending her garden, caring for her flowers, or gathering pecans.

She touched more lives than she ever realized. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wayne Allen Mallard; her sisters, Nelle Thomas (A.B.) and Oletha Cole (Craig); and her brother-in-law, Bill Hobbs.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Sherrye Gail Hobbs.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Oakwood Community Living Center. She leaves three very special friends there: Mr. Charles Lanier, Mrs. Carolyn Thrasher, and Mrs. Hester Hill.

Serving as pallbearers will be Scott Getson, Matt Getson, Luke Getson, David Scott Thomas, Evan Thomas, and Ty Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Hilliard, Robert Blevins, Pete Carpenter, Ronnie Weatherly and Terry Williams.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mallard will be held at 11:30 AM on Saturday, March 7, 2026, in the Chapel of the Johnson-Williams Funeral Home. Officiating this service will be Rev. Ken Smith and Mr. Patrick Williams. Interment will follow in Zion Cemetery in the Cloverdale Community. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:30 AM until 11:30 at Johnson-Williams Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored by memorial donations to Center Methodist Church in her memory, in care of Pat Carpenter, 596 Nora Drive, Newbern, Tennessee 38059 of the charity of donor's choice.
