Burton Lee Garten, 67, of Greenwood, Indiana passed away on the evening of November 15, 2021 at home. Burton was born in Franklin, Indiana to the late James R. Garten and Emalou (Burton) Garten.

After graduating from Southport High School in Indianapolis in 1972, Burton went on to graduate from Indiana University Bloomington in 1976 and received his J.D. from Indiana University School of Law in 1979. Burton worked for the State of Indiana for 39 years, 30 of which were for the State Department of Health as an Attorney and Director until his retirement in 2019. Having met his future wife at I.U., he married Susan Ruth (Heine) Garten in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. They have a daughter, Sarah E. W. Davidson.

Burton was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle. He loved spending time with his family, especially his daughter, Sarah, son-in-law Jason and grandson, Miles. He was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive father and husband. Burton thoroughly enjoyed traveling and vacationing with family. He loved reading and studying history and science. For over 50 years, Burton was an avid genealogist, having studied all of his and his wife's families. He published a genealogy newsletter for 20 years, and he wrote two books on Garten genealogy. Those who knew Burton were touched by his integrity, kindness, and humor.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Susan R. Garten; daughter Sarah (Jason) Davidson; grandson Miles Davidson; his brother James (Lajauna) Garten and sisters Melinda (Keith) Smedema and Juanita Garten (Brian) Eacret and many nieces and nephews as well as a number of close friends he called family.

I am so sorry for your loss. He was so funny and kind and had great stories to tell us here in the complaints section at the Department of Health. He was missed when he retired but so glad to have known him. Prayers for the family.

So very sorry to hear this. Burton made many days at ISDH brighter with his sense of humor and his overall kindness to everyone in our commission. If I had a question regarding a contract issue, he was always very helpful. He was missed after his retirement. My sympathies to all of his family.

So sorry to hear this. I worked with Burton at the Indiana Department of Health. He worked in the Office of Legal Affairs and then the Consumer Services and Healthcare Regulation Commission for Terry Whitson. He was my go to for rules for the Executive Board. When he retired he left a big void of experience and knowledge about the agency. He will be missed.

It was a shock to learn of Burton's passing. We were childhood friends--we lived on the same street growing up, and had many fun times playing together. Burton was always a kind person, and devoted to his family and friends. My sincere condolences to all his family. Ron Rodman, Northfield, Minnesota
