Byron Hayes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wilson Family Funeral Home - Atwater on May 18, 2026.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of 66 yr old Byron Hayes. Byron passed away at his home in Turlock, California, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.

Born on July 29, 1959, Byron was a proud graduate of Turlock High School, Class of 1978. He shared a lifelong bond with his brothers, Randy and Steve, and had a deep love and appreciation for them both. He also held a special place in his heart for his precious mother, Marylin, whose love meant so much to him. He often spoke with pride about Steve's talent as a musician and Randy's remarkable ability to build a house from the ground up, holding great respect for each of them. During his time at Turlock High, he distinguished himself as a top-tier athlete, excelling in both basketball and baseball. His talent and dedication earned him the honor of "Most Valuable Athlete" in his senior year. His mother was at every game, faithfully supporting him, and lovingly clipped and saved newspaper articles and photos from his basketball and baseball days-a true supermom in every sense.

In his adult years, Byron began working alongside his father, David Hayes, driving a cement mixer - a job he took great pride in. He was especially proud to have worked side by side with his father, who taught him everything he knew about the trade, a legacy Byron carried with him throughout his career. After the passing of his father in 1993, Byron experienced one of life's greatest joys with the birth of his only child, Brandon. From that moment on, their bond - fondly known as "Big B and Little B" - became the center of his world. He also embraced Brandon's brothers, William and Kevin, loving them as if they were his own.

Following a successful 35-year career in the union, Byron retired, but his competitive spirit never faded. He developed a passion for golf, often encouraging his son to join him on the course. Though he never kept an official handicap, his skill spoke for itself - regularly shooting in the low 80s and even breaking into the 70s on occasion.

In his later years, Byron moved in with his son and formed a special bond with his grandchildren, Emiliano, Alexander, and Violet. Whether at the driving range or his favorite course, Creekside, Byron cherished his time outdoors. He especially loved being with his grandchildren, teaching them how to throw a ball or swing a bat, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Byron is survived by his son, Brandon Hayes; his mother, Marylin Hayes; his brothers, Randy Hayes and Steve Hayes; and his three grandchildren: Emiliano Hayes, Alexander Hayes, and Violet Hayes. He will also be deeply missed by his nephews, nieces, and cousins, as well as his Aunt Jill, whom he loved like a second mother.

Byron is preceded in death by his father, David Hayes.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 23rd at Covenant Living of Turlock's Berg Hall, 2125 N. Olive Ave, Turlock, CA 95382, at 1:00 PM. Please try to park on the street if possible.
