C. Clennon Obituary

In the warm embrace of the Lord, The Rt. Rev. C. Hopeton Clennon, known affectionately to all as Hopeton, was called to his heavenly home on Sunday, January 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born under the Jamaican sun in the vibrant city of Kingston, Hopeton was a beacon of light and love to everyone he encountered. He departed from this earthly realm, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, friendship, and unwavering faith.

Hopeton was a cherished husband to his beloved wife, Shelia Clennon, a guiding father to his son, Andrew Clennon of Bethlehem, and his daughters, Danielle Landis alongside her husband Jared of Limerick, and Hope-Elizabeth Clennon-Hibbert with her husband Randy of NJ. His life was further blessed by the laughter of his grandchildren, Nathaniel, and Grace. He was a brother who walked in love with his sisters, Evett Joy Barnett of Los Angeles, CA, and Bethinia (Betty) Edwards of Jamaica. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents Enos Leopold Clennon and Iris May (Jones) Clennon, and his late sisters, Andrea Mae Clennon and Denese Clennon.

Hopeton's journey of enlightenment began at the University of the West Indies and the United Theological College of the West Indies. His thirst for knowledge was quenched at the fountain of wisdom, and his spirit was molded by the hands of those who taught him. Ordained in the year of 1983, he ministered to the flock of the Jamaica Province of the Moravian Church. In 1989, the Lord called him to new pastures in the United States. There, he shepherded the congregations of Faith Moravian Church in Washington, DC, Schoeneck Moravian Church in Nazareth, PA, and the Moravian Church of Downey, near Los Angeles, CA. His devotion and service were recognized in 1998 when he was consecrated as the 320th bishop of the worldwide Moravian Unity. In 2013, Hopeton became the Senior Pastor for Central Moravian Church, Bethlehem. Beyond the pulpit, Hopeton served as a guiding light at Moravian University and Moravian Theological Seminary, offering wisdom and comfort as their Chaplain. His work was not confined within the walls of the church; it extended into the hearts and lives of all he encountered. Hopeton was a man of many interests, including an avid stamp collector and a world traveler. His heart, however, always led him back to his roots. He was a driving force in the renovation of Camp Hope in Jamaica, the very place that shaped his youth. His passion for helping others led him to secure funding to improve elementary schools in Jamaica's impoverished areas, ensuring that the light of education would shine upon the faces of children just as it had on his life. Kindness was the cloth from which Hopeton was cut, friendliness was the path he walked, and faith was the staff he carried. He lived a life that exemplified these virtues, touching the lives of countless individuals with his gentle smile and warm embrace.

To Hopeton´s family, the Central congregation and the Moravian worldwide mission, know that the LV ecumenical community mourns with you. Hopeton made an impact wherever he went. He brought people together from around the world. In addition to being a local colleague I was privileged to travel with him to his beloved Jamaica and be introduced to the Jamaican Moravian community. It was mind expanding and heartwarming just like Hopeton.

WHAT A PRESENCE Hopeton was up on the pulpit for Moravian vespers. Wonderful memory.

Hopeton was one of those persons who easily lit up a room. He had a big personality, a captivating laugh and wore a smile that enlightened and radiated compassion. He was the pastor who took time to know people by name, the photographer who captured some great moments along life´s journey.
We shared many wonderful moments and important milestones along the journey. He was a friend, a counselor and a colleague in ministry.
We treasure the moments we spent with Hopeton and Shelia and we are assured by his life and testimony that he has entered into His rest that remains for God´s people.

I´ve never attended or met Hopeton. My sister and niece are members of his church. However, he has impacted my sister greatly. I know this because she always light up when talking to me about his services and message. She always recommended me to attend to get the feel and spirit he added to the service. I wish I did, because all she has told me and what I have learned from his story here brought warmth to my heart. I know he will be missed and thought of often by my sister and clearly by the many he has touched through his word of the lord and all his teachings. May he live in eternity alongside his heavenly family and in the hearts of those he left behind.

Hopeton was one of the nicest, most decent, and beautiful human beings I have ever known. From my first meeting him 44.5 years ago to the last time I communicated with him a few years back, and many times in between, he was among the kindest, gentlest, and humblest of human beings. The old pick up truck - considerably older than he was - that he drove to seminary, when I first met him, is to Hopeton as a donkey was, to Jesus: humility marked all over it. Laughter, warmth, disarming charm, emotional balance, genuineness and friendship are the epitome of this gift to the world, removed all too soon. His departure leaves so many of us broken; but his life of service and joys therefrom - both to him and us - assures us that he has now entered, fully, the joy of the Lord. What a blessing to have shared life with him! To Sheila, the other members of the family, the congregations and the worldwide Moravian fellowship, we say hold tight and dig deep; for above are the Everlasting Arms that uphold you; and below, is the Rock of Your Salvation. "Walk good," Dear Hopeton.
