Dear Family of Dan Nash,
I have thought of Dan many times over the years. I recently did a search to see if I could learn what he was up to when I ran across his obituary. I am so sorry to hear of his passing.
I was a young tax accountant at Midland-Ross when Dan took over from the retiring tax manager. Dan immediately gave me responsibility that I don't believe the former manager would have given me. And, he obtained an unprecedented 20% raise for me as he said I was woefully underpaid. He became my mentor, and I don't think I ever let him down.
Although I was just beginning my long career in the corporate tax world, I had already observed that, while traditionally tax managers were promoted up from the ranks of accountants, due to the many new complex tax laws tax managers were now lawyers, as Dan was. I completed my MBA while working for Dan and he encouraged me to go to law school, which I did. So I, too, graduated from Cleveland-Marshall Law School.
I was sorry to see Dan leave Midland-Ross in 1979, but because of the responsibilities that he gave me, and therefore the experienced I gained, shortly after he left I was promoted to federal tax manager at Midland-Ross, which I owe to his confidence in me. I feel like I was his right-hand man in building the nascent Midland-Ross tax department from a glorified form-filing group of a small but rapidly growing company into a cadre of sophisticated tax professionals of a Fortune 500 company.
I am grateful to Dan for setting my career on the right path. We worked well together and I considered him a friend. He was a really nice guy and had a great sense of humor. I wish his family well.
