Caleb embodied the best aspects of the human spirit: fierce love of family and friends, unquestioning loyalty, an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, frank curiosity about the worlds of form and spirit, quick wit and a knack for story-telling. Those who knew him well knew that he was always good for a humorous yarn of some sort, even if he had to embellish a lot to make it funny.
His most recent exploit and one of the last great things he did was to rescue a dog that went flying out of the back of a pickup truck in front of him while he was riding his motorcycle with a friend up in Angeles Crest. Sunny, the new addition to our household, will forever remind me of how great, unselfish and caring Caleb was.
I know Caleb is very sorry for having left me behind like this, as well as all of you. He loved you all and he loved me too. He would have done anything for me, and he tried his best to stay with me, but his body could no longer sustain his great spirit.
As last days go, his last day was spectacular. We left the house early in the morning—early for him—and went on what began as a lovely motorcycle ride down to the beach. We took Encinal Canyon to PCH and stopped at a rest area to relax and look at the ocean. We were going to head back but after some consideration we decided to go up to Santa Barbara. We stopped at Uncle Rocco’s and indulged in our favorite pizza. He ate a bit too much, but didn’t seem to care that it would give him a stomach ache later. Even in that he was living life to the fullest, enjoying each moment as if it were his last. After lunch we walked around State Street and he picked out a skirt for me that he liked. Not knowing what to do with it to transport it home, he decided to shove it unceremoniously between the miniscule windshield and the instrument panel of my bike. Being an engineer, he also tied it to the handlebars, just in case, to make sure it didn’t fly out while I was riding.
He had more care for my safety than his own. When we stopped to refuel before heading back, he was giving me riding tips, telling me to be sure I looked all the way through my turns and to avoid riding too close to the double yellow line because when you lean into a turn your body can easily cross that line while the tires are still on the correct side of the road. We took off quickly and enjoyed the view of the ocean on the way, his favorite place to be. We were nearly home when he lost his life, riding on the winding back roads of Moorpark to avoid traffic and enjoy the twisties, as he called them. Ironically, we had been on exactly the same road the day before. He knew those back roads well.
He died doing one of the many things he loved. He left his body while in pursuit of freedom. Now he is free. I know he would want each of us to live our lives to the fullest, to love each other fiercely each and every day, and never take a single moment for granted. He wants me to tell you all how deeply he loved you and how grateful he was to have had you in his life, for each of you in your own way made his life fuller. He also wants me to honor the fact that he has left behind a loving wife, whom he will always love dearly, and I in turn will always love him.
To my husband now forever young, I love you now and always. My life will always be richer for the time I’ve spent here with you. You were the greatest part of me, for our lives were intertwined. I carry you now with me always. Rest and be comforted.
Come join us as we celebrate the life of Caleb Bryant

From James Bryant:
The Life Celebration of Caleb James Bryant
A Life Celebration was held for Caleb on Thursday evening, July 10th at 6:30 PM on a beautiful little beach a few miles north of Malibu called Sycamore Cove. We drove more than an hour from Moorpark through the mountains and a beautiful canyon down to the sea. I estimate the celebration was attended by more than 200 friends, family and co-workers of Caleb and Ericka. It was overwhelming to see the many people that had been touched by Calebs life. We all gathered in a circle around a well used and well abused old picnic table with the sound of the surf behind us. A beautiful talk was given by Caleb and Ericka´s good friend Kusala who is a Buddhist Monk. The sentiment was not overly religious but very spiritually positive and left everyone at ease.
Next were Calebs guitar teacher Chris, and a female vocalist friend who played and sang a couple of their favorite songs. One of the songs was "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones which Caleb had learned and sang to Ericka just the night before the accident.
Then Ericka came to the center of the circle in a beautiful white dress and shawl. She was the epitome of composure and grace under pressure and I think it was one of the bravest moments I´ve ever witnessed. She spoke for 20 minutes about Caleb and his life. Only near the end did she waver because of the emotion that had welled within her. Caleb was a very lucky man to have had this magnificent woman at his side for the years they spent together and I know he loved her very much.
Next was Calebs best and oldest friend in California, Sam whom he met working at Kinkos when he first moved to California. Sam gave an eloquent, heartfelt speech about Caleb. I had met Sam early on when Caleb moved there and I have always felt a kinship with him also and could see why he and Caleb were attracted to each other.
Next was his best friend from college in Michigan and the best man at his wedding, Marty. Marty is a very gentle, sincere individual. He was married young with a child while they all went to college together and while a lot of guys were out partying Caleb always had time for his friends to sit and watch a movie with them or even baby sit so they could get out by themselves. That child will be 18 years old this year and on his way to college next year. Marty had flown in from Michigan and would have to catch the red-eye back that same night for an important job interview but he would have never missed this occasion for his friend Caleb. Although there were many miles separating them they always remained best friends and stayed in touch.
After everyone spoke, Kusala said a few more words and everyone had been given a rose and we all sent our private thoughts out to Caleb and threw our roses into the sea. As we walked toward the sea another friend played the trumpet. I only took one photograph at the celebration but I think it says it all. This was only one side of the beach. The entire cove was filled with roses.
I was standing there, numb, looking out at the vastness of the Pacific Ocean when I looked down and saw these two beautiful, round, flat, shiny, black rocks in the surf. I don´t know why exactly, but I just felt I had to pick them up, dress shoes and all so I waded in. I picked them up and hauled them around with me for the rest of the celebration, put them in the car, took them to the house and rinsed the sand off and put them in the suitcase, flew back to Austin and took them out when we got home. I washed them off again and propped them up against the kitchen sink and stood admiring the beauty and simplicity that time and the sea had produced. One is slightly larger than the other. I have named the larger one Caleb and the smaller one Ericka. They now have a new home many miles from their sea and will not be going anywhere and will always stay with me until I too am gone someday.
A Classic Caleb Story (Part 1, The Rescue)
This was a story relayed to me while I was at Caleb and Erickas house this past week. I may embellish because I wasn´t actually there but Caleb would have done the same thing with one of his many stories. He was quite an embellisher like his dad. :<)
Caleb and his friend Steve were out riding their motorcycles one day about a week or two before the accident and they had come up in back of a truck that was weaving around in front of them with a dog in the back that was getting knocked all over the place in the pickup bed. All of a sudden the truck struck a pothole or something and the dog went flying out of the truck bed into the street. Caleb and Steve immediately pulled over and got off their bikes and went to the dog. The guy in the pickup who we shall refer to as the "idiot" gets out of the truck and comes back in a surly mood and says... "Hey...that´s my dog"! To which Caleb replied..."Not anymore it´s not so get back in your "Fing" truck and get the "F" out of my face"! (The "F" word was one of Calebs favorite expletives according to Ericka in her speech on the beach)
Now at this point of the story I have to interject a footnote. Caleb was always a kind of skinny little guy like me and his brother Alex growing up but in his early 30´s he began working out daily. He had pretty much a full gymnasium in his garage at home. At the get together back at their house after the beach a male neighbor told me that when Caleb was working out in the garage with the door open all the housewives in the cul-de-sac would curiously have to check the mail sometimes 3 or 4 times during his workout! Hmmm?
He also practiced the disciplines of Martial Arts for many years and was a Master of those disciplines. So what I´m getting at here is that this kind hearted, sweet, smart, funny guy was also one Bad Ass Mo-Fo that you did not want to "F" with! (Sorry about all the expletives but I am my sons father after all) :>) So, quite wisely I might add, the "idiot" quickly caught the vibe, got back into his truck and left. Caleb stayed with the dog and Steve went to get a vehicle to take the dog back to Calebs.
A Classic Caleb Story (Part 2, "Sunny")`
So this dog was rescued on Sunland Ave. He has beautiful golden-yellow eyes and a very sweet disposition so Caleb named him "Sunny". Sunny is a brownish-red Pit mix. When I arrived last Wednesday Sunny and I immediately bonded. He would sit with his head in my lap and on my chest, follow me all over the place, sit at my feet. He was more of a comfort to me than he´ll ever know. I think he sensed that I needed him. I love dogs as much as Caleb and Ericka do and this guy just completely stole my heart. So here´s a pic of me and Sunny and one in his new back yard where he will now have a wonderful life with Ericka, Mackey, and Isis all thanks to the kindness of a stranger named Caleb Bryant.
To Caleb:
Son I will miss you and think about you every day of my life. You meant so much to me and to so many people. Your physical form is gone but your great spirit and our memories of you will live forever. The adage R.I.P. doesn´t seem to fit you because I can´t picture you resting wherever you are so I´m changing it to P.I.P which will mean "Progress In Peace".
To Ericka:
Ericka you will need to be strong in the coming days, weeks and how ever long it takes. We are all here for you. Caleb was a gifted Mechanical Engineer and he as much as anyone understood the concept of variables in an equation. When several variables come together within a given time signature a result happens. Sometimes it´s a positive result and sometimes not. A 10 second variation in the time signature one side or the other of that event and we would not be having this discussion today. It was pure happenstance. So from here on you must move forward as you always did with Caleb. Our newly coined phrase P.I.P. not only is pertinent to those that have passed on but those of us that are still here. So Ericka, my sweet girl please...
"Progress In Peace".
I Love You Both,
Dad
Nancy, Alex, Paige and I want to thank all of our great friends and family for their emotional, spiritual, financial and myriads of other forms of support throughout this ordeal. I know I speak for Ericka also in saying that our family and friends are the most important parts of our lives not only in the good times but the rough times as well.
Jim Bryant
I have added Calebs obituary below:
Written 7/8/08
BRYANT, CALEB JAMES - Age 36, was a great spirit, a force to be reckoned with. Caleb passed away as a result of a motorcycle accident on July 4, 2008. He died doing one of the many things he loved to do. He is survived by his loving wife, Ericka Hansen Bryant; and his adoring parents, Linda and Mike Wilkinson and Jim and Nancy Bryant; and their children, Brett and Alex. Caleb's body could not contain him for long. It was too confining. He spent his considerably full life in pursuit of freedom of the mind and body of knowledge and of happiness. He had a very busy mind and was always curious. He was an incredible inventor with several patents to his name, a wonderful, witty story-teller, a great friend and a loving husband. He embodied a spirit of exploration that kept him ever questing for more experiences and information about the world he inhabited. Born June 17, 1972, and raised in Jackson, Michigan, he moved to California to find his fortune after completing his engineering degree at Central Michigan. He met and married Ericka Hansen Bryant, the love of his life, and they made their home in Moorpark, California. Caleb relished racing cars, riding motorcycles and scuba diving. He had a great love of traveling, hiking and exploring. He adored the animals he and his wife adopted, including most recent addition, Sunny, whom Caleb rescued when the animal fell out of the back of a pickup truck. That was just his way. Caleb also adored music. He learned to play the guitar and attacked playing with the same passion with which he did everything else. He endeavored to become a better musician, taking lessons, practicing daily, even getting advice from other guitar players on You Tube. He explored music with friends who shared his obsession, tirelessly searching out new artists and enjoying his old favorites. Caleb leaves behind an endless line of friends and family who loved and adored him. He touched many lives in so many ways through his kindness and generosity. He loved his friends and family fiercely and would do anything for them. He worked tirelessly to ensure that his wife was taken care of, removing every burden possible from her shoulders. He attended to all the minute details of their lives without complaint or expectation of reward, seeking only the affection and love of the woman he loved so dearly. He will be greatly missed. Services will be held on his favorite beach on Thursday at sunset.

Ericka,
I was humming this song today, so I thought I would share it with you. It's from the Beatles, "In my Life" I think Caleb wanted you to hear it.
There are places I'll remember
Some forever not for better
All these places had their moments
Some are dead and some are living
There is no one compares with you
When I think of love as something new
For people and things that went before
In my life I love you more
Though I know I'll never lose affection
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more

To Ericka & Caleb's family & friends,
I'm very sorry for your loss. My husband and I came up to the accident site about 4:40 p.m. on our way to Waters Road where our horses are boarded. My heart just sank seeing the scene. I have traveled on Stockton Road for the better part of 18 years four or five times a week.
Although, I did not know Caleb, please know I have and I will continue to think of him as I pass that twistie on Stockton Road.
Take Care.

Caleb was a great person and a great friend. It is still hard for me to believe that he is gone. I will miss his funny faces, funny voices, and loyal friendship. I will miss sharing our complaints about the Detroit Lions and our gloating about the Red Wings. I will miss reminiscing about old times and talking about what the future holds. I will miss my friend! I love you bro! Until we meet again....
Marty
I would like to share a poem that is the epitome of what Caleb means to me.
True Friendship
True friendship isn't seen with the eyes, it is felt with the heart when there is trust, understanding, loyalty, and sharing.
True friendship is a rare feeling, but when it is found
It has profound impact on our well-being, strength, and character.
True friendship does not need elaborate gifts
Or spectacular events in order to be valuable or valued.
To ensure long-lasting quality and satisfaction,
True friendship only needs a few key ingredients:
Undying loyalty, unmatched understanding, unsurpassed trust,
Deep and soulful secrets, and endless sharing.
These ingredients, mixed with personality and a sense of humor,
Can make a friendship last a lifetime!
This is just a thank you, my friend, for all the wonderful and colorful
Special ingredients You've brought to my life!

My dear Ericka,
There is a story that Caleb told me, that is funny, but he didn't tell you as he said to me 'she'd kill me'. He was going to the vet with one of the dogs (maybe the new one) and parked outside was this pristine 1967 mustang. He was looking inside it checking out the interior, the dash, etc. He looks down on the floor and low and behold were the keys, and the door was unlocked. He wanted to take it for a quick spin around the block. He looked both ways, looked again at the keys, and decided to go into the vet first. He came out and the mustang was gone. His eyes bugged and he said, 'I would have been so busted 'cause they would have come back, their car gone and then I would be driving back up with it'. I was laughing so hard and told him, 'good thing you didn't take it.
The Caleb we knew and loved and will continue to love through the stories.
You can take the boy out of Detroit, but can't take Detroit out of the boy...
He and I were like brother and sister. We talked and shared many things and had great laughs.
He told me that story just 1 week prior to the accident, when I met him and Sam at a place in Hollywood. I got to get him to move his hips a little as I was dancing next to him. He grabbed me around my waist to keep me close as he said 'girl, with all that hip shakin', some guys are gonna come around and I'm gonna have to kick some a$$.' Lookin' out for his 'little' sister.
I loved watching my husband and Caleb talk about music, and share their passion for it. Whenever we went to their house, it was into the closet to see what music they could come up with. It was a treasured friendship and I loved seeing it develop.
He honored me with his care and our shared interests. I loved martial arts and we both loved to be adventurous. I miss you dearly Caleb, and you will always have a place in my heart.
With love always,
Georgina

Inadvertantly, while surfing the web, I came upon this website. Once here, I got completely enthralled in it and have read every page. I feel compelled to reach out to you and to tell you that you are in my thoughts and prayers tonight as you brave these bitter days ahead. I am terribly sorry for your loss. It is obvious that Caleb was a very special man. Keep putting one foot in front of the other while you carry Caleb's spirit in your heart.

Caleb,
I enjoyed the years we worked together and shared our passion for BMWs. I guess I can stop buying cars now, since you won't be able to give me flack on the next addition. But I know you hear my prayers for you and yes I did buy the M5 so I could one up you.
I wish we had the opportunity to ride the twisties together, but you will forever ride with me when I am out.
God Speed my friend and we will meet up again in time.

Caleb - How can someone who was such a pain in the a** be missed so much by so many? :) Maybe because we all know how much you cared - for your wife, your family, your friends, your work, and your world.
You taught me, listened to me, challenged me, and made me laugh. I'll miss your dedication to making your part of the world a little better, your philosophical soul, and your complete intolerance of stupidity in anyone or anything. I'll miss your mile-a-minute way of talking and that soft heart you tried (and failed) to hide.
My life is richer for your presence. It saddens but does not surprise me that this earth proved too small for the force of nature that you are. I have every confidence that we will all meet you again someday.
And when we do...THAT will be a helluva party!

My Darling Erikca,
You cried with me through my troubles and your care was beyond measure. Know that I will be forever present for you in kind.
I love you, Candace

I have one small drop of knowing in my soul.
Let it dissolve in your ocean.'
