Calvin Julius Hutzler, of Rio Medina, Texas, passed away November 29, 2025 at the age of 89. He was born December 25, 1935 in Castroville, Texas, to Julius Adolph Hutzler and Rosa Alma Wengenroth Hutzler.
Calvin graduated from La Coste High School in 1954 and attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville where he played football as a running back. He received a BS in History in 1958 and later earned his Master of Education. He coached at several schools including D'Hanis, La Coste, Laredo Martin, and Judson. He was the athletic director at Judson before becoming principal at Converse Elementary and Woodlake Elementary and retired in 1990. In 2018, Calvin was inducted into the Texas A&I Athletic Hall of Fame. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
On April 14, 1962, Calvin married Shirley Mae Koehler in Hondo, Texas. They were blessed with twenty-four years of marriage and two children at the time of her passing in 1986.
Survivors include his children, Trisha Doucette (Louis) and Scott Hutzler; grandchildren, Tyler Hutzler (Hilary), Ryan Hutzler, Jackson Hutzler, Koehler Doucette (Sarah), and Benny Doucette; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley Hutzler; sisters, Vivian Lutz (James) and Johanna Mae Taylor (James).
Visitation will be Thursday, December 11, 2025 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home, with the Funeral Service at 3:00 p.m. A Private Burial will take place at Mission Burial Park South in San Antonio, Texas.
