Carin Ann Nelson, 61, of Burlington, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born on June 19, 1964, in Burlington, Carin was the daughter of Thomas J. and Linda (McLaughlin) Clayton. She grew up in the city she would call home her entire life, graduating from Burlington High School in 1982 before going on to earn her degree from the University of Iowa.
Carin spent a decade working at Hope Haven in Day Hab, where she poured herself into caring for her clients with a devotion that defined her. She didn't simply do the work, she loved the people.
That warmth was something everyone around her felt. Carin didn't know a stranger. She moved through the world with humor, openness, and a spirit that made any room better for her presence.
Outside of work, Carin had a gift for finding beauty in unexpected places. She loved antiquing, and there was no small satisfaction in tracking down just the right owl lamp. Those who knew her best know she found joy in the world and loved spreading that happiness to all those close to her.
Her boys and her family were her world. She is survived by her two sons, Benjamin Nelson and Alexander Nelson; her special friend, Richie Butherus; her parents, Thomas and Linda Clayton; her siblings, Tommy (Josie) Clayton, Becky Shanahan, and Susie (Troy) Kuster; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces.
She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.
A private family ceremony will be held at Lunning Chapel. A celebration of Carin's life will follow at the Eagles Club on Thursday, Feb. 26, beginning at 4 p.m.
A memorial has been established in her name. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
