After graduating from Tonawanda High School in 1957, Carl received his associate’s degree from Erie County Community College and then joined the US Air Force. He served six years and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Carl and his wife, Jane, returned to Nashville to raise their family where Carl was an engineer at NES. He completed his bachelor’s degree at UT Nashville. He also joined the Tennessee Air National Guard, serving as a navigator on C-130s until his retirement at the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1988.
Upon Jane’s death in 1990, fate brought Carl and his wife, Mary, together during a grief counseling group at Alive Hospice. Their marriage in 1992 expanded Carl’s role to Pops, perhaps his most cherished title of all.
Carl was a huge Vols fan and especially loved watching Pat Summit’s Lady Vols. He loved teasing his children and grands, and he spoiled his family with his cooking and grilling skills. He was a devoted member of Saint Ann Catholic Church. His gentle spirit and kind, generous heart will carry us through this difficult time.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; his daughter, Angela Mills (Chris); stepchildren Jeff Smithson (Jessica), Wendy Lucas (Robert) and Kristi Biggs (Robbie); grandchildren, Drew and Caroline Mills, Andrea Roberts, Olivia Dean and Timothy Roberts, Ryan, Reagan and Reid Smithson, and Tory Beth Biggs; great grandchildren Tristan Roberts, Taryn, Keaton, and CJ Dean; and sister, Viv Morris as well as his brothers and sisters-in law and nephews.
