Carl E Baker

1933-2016

Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend Carl Eugene Baker died on July 7, 2016.  He was the 7th child of Curt Richard and Beulah Kennedy Baker, born at home during a snow storm, on March 20, 1933 in Scotland Co., Missouri.

He attended several one room schools and graduated from Kahoka High School in 1951.  He was a FFA member, excelled at playing basketball, as a baseball pitcher whose favorite position was Batter.  He worked for the CB&Q RR before enlisting in the US Air Force.  After basic training he attended technical school in Biloxi, MS, then on to Japan and Korea as a Morris Code Operator.

Upon his return, he married Patricia Clark on July 31, 1955 and they had two children:  Kenneth Karl and Judith Jane.  Carl served his country for over 23 years.  He came to Hill AF Base with the opening of the Utah Test and Training Range, serving as NCOIC and later with the X-ray Facility (at the time the third largest x-ray facility in the free world).  During his career he played on various baseball teams, winning trophies in handball and horse shoe pitching. He went to nationals for the USAF with a partner in handball one year.  He excelled in writing and the English language.

After retirement, he worked for the American Sportsman Club as regional sales manager.  His love of hunting began as a youth especially bird hunting.  His favorite dog was the Brittany, which he bred, raised and trained for over 44 years.  His enthusiasm led to many friendships as he talked about, shipped pups all over the country and kept records for numerous dogs.  His written article about the whelping of pups was published in the national Gun Dog magazine.  He read veterinarian books and training manuals and was always willing to help others with their dogs.  He valued his many friendships made with the dogs and hunting trips.  One summer he built a six kennel trailer for special trips.

Carl was a gifted singer and self taught guitarist.  He had a smooth voice and soft guitar.  He sang with the Old Timers at the Heritage Senior Center, with two friends at church as well as a soloist, at retirement centers and everywhere else.  You could find him in the store by his whistling or humming tunes.

Carl was a man of Faith with a wonderful sense of humor.  He was baptized in the creek behind the Cedar Gove Baptist Church near Kahoka, MO, and raised in a loving Southern Baptist family, singing with his father and brothers on Wednesday nights.  He loved country music and good old westerns on television.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Vesta, Wayne, Edna, Ray, Minnie, C J, and Bill.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, his son, Kenneth (Lani) and daughter, Judith, and sister-in-law Evelyn Baker of Raymore, MO; his grandchildren, Jessica, Eric (Lauren), Jeffrey (Cortney), Logan; Patrick, Ryan A, Lauren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 11, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Clearfield Community Church, 200 So.  500 E., Clearfield.  Friends may visit family Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Interment,  Clearfield City Cemetery.
