Carl F. Chargois Sr.

Carl Chargois Sr. was a man who many would agree, made his presence known. He was a big man; well over 6 ft. tall with a robust physique, and a loud, booming, baritone voice. Also known as "Googie" "Shag" "Shag Wa" "Chag" "Chag War" "Old Man" and "Pops" among others, he was never without words to start, keep up with, or abruptly end a conversation. Carl was highly opinionated, well-read, and full of experiences. His knowledge of all sorts of topics was a constant source of pathways which he used to communicate with people.
Carl was the 2nd of 7 children in his sibling group. He and his siblings (Sidney, Alvin, J. Michael, Rosemary, Lois, and H. Gerard) grew up in Houston's 3rd Ward; first on Beulah Street, then on Wichita street. After his Father Sidney Chargois died when he was 11, Carl's mother, Viola, worked very hard to raise and support the 7 children; with Sidney Jr. and Carl Sr. working and helping keep things afloat. It is this work ethic that was and still is a standard for Chargois men and women; for we are a family of hard-working, life-loving people.
After attending and graduating from St. Nicholas Catholic School in Houston, Texas, Carl worked at the Petroleum Club in Downtown Houston. He then got a job at Wayne Supply, then Hughes Tool Co., both oilfield support related businesses. Carl was then drafted to the military in 1958 and served as a military policeman in Germany – on a solid fuel missile base; returning to Houston in 1960 after being honorably discharged from military service. Carl then returned to work and worked at General Foods/Maxwell House Coffee off Harrisburg Drive for over 30 years; retiring in 1997. It is at Maxwell House where Carl made many lifelong friends.
Carl was married thrice, and it is with his second wife, Wintress Faye (Wysingle) Chargois, that he raised 5 children; Michelle Holland (Don), Carl Jr., Damon (Rebekka), Kirk, and Angela (Rahul). It is his children who were the source of his greatest joy. Carl spoke very proudly of his children and he was very much moved by the fantastic job that Faye (as she was known) did with raising the children into good, contributing members of society. He gave credit where it was due and he also left examples to his children to serve as motivation in their daily challenges; being a hard worker probably being his greatest example.
Carl Chargois Sr.'s time on this earth and the legacy that he leaves behind serve as his life resume, however, the people with whom he shared time with can all attest to the fact that Carl Chargois lived a full and complete life. He enjoyed good food, good people, and was never without an opinion or word to share, for everyone who came in contact with "Googie" "Shag" "Shag Wa" "Chag" "Chag War" "Old Man" and "Pops" all usually smiled or had a look of shock on their faces, because this old man was never without a random fact, piece of trivia, a word to say or an opinion to share.
He will be missed by many.
