Carl Wayne “Corky” Whetzel, age 70 of Fisher, WV, passed away Sunday morning, August 6, 2023, at the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. Born on June 22, 1953, in Petersburg, WV, he was a son of the late Carl Victor Whetzel and Martha Susan Eye Whetzel. His wife, Brenda Sherman Whetzel preceded him in death in February 2011. A brother, Chester Whetzel and a brother-in-law, Eugene Sherman also preceded him in death.
Corky was a 1972 graduate of Moorefield High School and was an athlete playing football, basketball and baseball. After high school he continued playing in the local softball league for many years. He served as President of the local Little League Baseball as well as coached from many years including little league football. Corky loved Moorefield High School sports, watching his sons play over the years and was a true Mountaineer fan, enjoying WVU sports as well. He had many loves in his life, his wife, his children, his dogs but the granddaughters, oh how special they were to him. Corky will be remembered as a people person, always enjoying the company of family, friends and acquaintances.
Surviving are two sons, Joe Whetzel of Mooresville, NC and Ben Whetzel of Fisher, WV; his loveable granddaughters, Kennedy & Madison; his sister-in-law, Martha Sherman along with nieces and nephews, Robbie Dollar, Sherri Dollar and great-nieces & nephews, Taylor Dollar, Maggie Dollar & Walker Dollar all of Metter, GA and a brother, James Whetzel.
Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday, August 10, 2023, at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street with Pastor Harold George officiant. Interment will follow in the Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
