Carl Addison Hintmann, aged 80, of Augusta, Missouri, departed this life peacefully on Thursday, July 24, 2025 after a long battle with cancer. Carl approached his medical battle with the same tenacity and resilience with which he faced every other challenge in his life, surprising his unparalleled medical team at BJC (but not his family and friends) with his determination and strength of will to carry on. Despite his pain, Carl stayed unapologetically himself until his last breaths and signed off according to his own terms.

Carl was born on January 7, 1945, in South St. Louis, Missouri. He was the cherished son of Carl and Marie Hintmann (nee Roth), his beloved Mom and Pop who preceded him in death. Carl served his country in the U.S. Air Force, and later had a long and productive career in management with McDonnell Douglas and the Boeing Company where he met Susie, the love of his life. His greatest passion was fishing, and his happiest moments in life were spent casting a line with his family and friends and a cooler of beer. He was an accomplished handyman who could fix anything, and he even built the home in which he and Susie raised their children. Carl also enjoyed hunting for antique treasures with Susie, and spent many happy hours at flea markets, garage sales, and auctions. During his illness when Carl had to turn to less physical pursuits, he spent hours challenging himself with puzzles, reading books, and watching golf and irreverent cartoons.

Carl is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Susan Hintmann (nee Kierath), and his loving children, Brooke (Mark) Nelson and CG Hintmann. Carl found great joy in his role as Grampy to his treasured grandchildren, Charlotte and Alexandra Nelson. He is also remembered by his dear siblings, Sharon (the late Joe) Hensley, Sandy Hartmann, and Michael (Marylee) Hintmann, as well as his sister and brothers-in-law, Karen (Jim) Anderson, Steve (Chris) Kierath, and Brian (the late Cherryl) Kierath. Carl's legacy also continues through his large circle of nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.

Carl will be deeply missed but never forgotten. He was a true original that we are confident the world will never see a close comparison, as his life is highlighted by many crazy stories and near-death experiences. Everyone that knew Carl has memories and stories regarding an unforgettable thing that Carl said or did, and the family would love for everyone to keep those memories alive and share them.  One of Carl's hallmarks was that he was always quick to selflessly offer a helping hand. To honor the memory of Carl, and in lieu of flowers or contributions, the family requests that you perform an act of kindness for a loved one or a stranger, whether big or small. When performing that kindness, please think of Carl and share a story of how he helped you in life.

Carl will be laid to rest with full military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery on July 31, 2025 in a small private ceremony. Thereafter, Carl will be perpetually “gone fishing.”
