Carl H. Kjobech

I knew Dr. Kjobech back in the early 70's, at the Deaconess hospital. Initially got to know him best when he cared for my mother in law. She passed away at age 46 with widespread cancer. Through the years worked along side him caring for his patients. I knew I could call him at anytime and tell that something wasn't right with this patient. Told him vital signs are normal but something wasn't right. He would drop things at the clinic and come directly over to the hospital. Of course this was waaay before the hospitalist entered the health care system. More times than not he was needed. Dr. Kjobech was a kind, generous, sensitive man and he loved and respected all his patients. I remember a time there was no oncology unit. Chemo was given on general medical unit with very little training for the nurses. Vesicants infusing and leaving the room and going on to something else.
There are so many wonderful stories about Dr. Kjobech. After all the years of working with his patients, I could never come to call him by his first name. It never was allowed in the 70's and 80's, by then it was habit and respect.
Dr. Kjobech will truly be missed.

Dr. Kjobech set the bar for excellence when I was a beginner oncology nurse in acute care. I learned so much from him as he was rounding on cancer patients. My husband Mike and I were also able to Nordic ski with Carl. Sending special condolences to his family.Sally Power

I first met Dr Kjobech in 1985 when I came to work in Oncology. I worked for him for several weeks in the beginning while waiting for his new nurse to start. I enjoyed working with him so much and would have loved to have stayed as his nurse if he hadn't already hired one. I stayed in Oncology though and was able to work with him for many years. I really liked and respected him very, very much.
After he retired I would see him out and about on his bicycle or in a store or somewhere and we would have a good chat. It was always so good to see him.
Then, after not having seen him for some years, I came to know him in a different way when he came to Infusion for treatment. My respect and admiration not only increased, but I grew to truly love him. I saw his lovely spirit, his soul, the sparkle in his eyes. His mind was so sharp and inquiring. He would start a conversation with his neighboring patient every visit and, as another co-worker has said, "he never knew a stranger." He is a truly exceptional person. I feel so very blessed to have known him and honored to have been able to help him with some of his treatments. I will remember him.
