I became an employee of PSS back in March of 2015. Dr. Laughlin introduced himself as "the tall one." He said his name would be easier to remember because he was the tallest surgeon of the group. There was always a large amount of wrens on the ledge outside his office window. Perhaps they recognized a kindred spirit. At about one month into working there, I was given the task of getting Dr. Laughlin to dictate his past due operative notes. This, I learned, was something he was VERY reluctant to do. He thought his handwritten notes would suffice. All I had to do was start down the hall toward his office, for him to run out of it to avoid me. Over time, we established a good working relationship, one with honesty and respect. He didn´t eat before his surgeries. He would have one of Dr. B´s unsweetened iced teas after or between surgeries.

Dr. Laughlin was selfless; often giving of his time, his money to help someone in need, performing some surgeries at no cost to the patient, sharing his surgical techniques, teaching, and listening; offering advice, sometimes sarcastically. He gave his best to his patients. Did he know he was living out Luke 6:38? Give and it shall be given unto you. He loved his family, his friends, and his employees. He was a wonderful boss. He was a good guy. We lost a good one, and he will be missed.

Doc, I just want to say thank you. Well done. Welcome home.

Dan was a fraternity brother and a great guy. He had a keen and devilish sense of humor. It often left me speechless. I will miss him.

I´m so saddened by his passing. Though I only was a patient of his since last June, he and his staff and Lily, made me feel like part of their family.

Words alone cannot express the sadness that I feel of Dan´s passing. He was not only my boss, but an amazing mentor and most of all a dear dear friend.
