On the morning of March 13, 2024, GOD in HIS infinite wisdom, BLESSED Carl M. Lewis with “ANGEL WINGS.” He was born in Campbell County, VA. on June 17, 1945, to the late Edna J. Lewis and the late Fleming Lewis, Jr.
Carl was a talented man with many interests. He especially enjoyed barbering and landscaping, in addition to, listening to music, dancing, gardening, cutting grass for others, collecting rare coins, and bird watching. Carl took great pride in the appearance of his own yard. An avid outdoorsman, he loved everything living-birds, bugs, trees, flowers, and nature. One could see him sitting on his porch, chatting with neighbors, and passersby, people watching, and taking in all of God’s beautiful creations.
As a Vietnam Veteran, Carl served his country proudly, and was awarded The Bronze Star Medal of Valor, as well as, numerous other military awards. He was indeed the family historian, sharing stories of who was related to whom, and how. He loved history, specifically black history…he was a natural story teller at heart. Quite the comedian, his sense of humor and laughter was infectious. If you didn’t laugh when listening to one of Carl’s stories, something was wrong with you! He loved putting a smile on everyone’s face, but would also tell it like it is, no nonsense, no sugar coating!
Carl was a family man, and we all knew…family was his priority. He worked tirelessly in the community and church until his health declined. He always took care of home; being a wonderful husband, provider and protector, to Brenda and his children. Carl was an honorable man of faith, meticulously dressed, charismatic, and he had a heart of pure gold. Carl was the Dad that we all desired to have. He was the biological father to three children, but had so many more that he was instrumental in rearing. He will live on in our hearts forever!
Leaving behind to mourn and miss him profoundly, are his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Brenda M. Lewis; one son, Kevin S. Lewis of Roanoke, VA.; two daughters, Tamala L. Tisdale and Carlisa N. Lewis; a great-niece/bonus daughter, Amyah N. Harris, all of Lynchburg, VA.; one grandson, Derrick L. Lewis; three great-granddaughters, Kolbie, Kay’Liana, and Kalia all of Madison Heights, VA.; one sister, Sarah L. Alexander of St. Albans, NY.; two brothers, Rev. Dr. Carl B. Hutcherson, Jr. of Lynchburg, VA. and Joe L. Morgan of Madison Heights, VA.; one sister-in-law, Clarice H. Lewis of Madison Heights, VA.; six godchildren, Jason A. Parrish of Madison Heights, VA., Kitty M. Brew, Tonya McDaniel-Nubie, Dana Hawkins-Whitted, all of Lynchburg, VA., Atrica Haskins of Roanoke Rapids, NC., Jharan Marshall-Vaughan of Jacksonsville, NC., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
