Carl Slocum Obituary

Dr. Carl William Slocum, M.D., 86, passed away at his home in Lexington, South Carolina, on October 17, 2025, after a long and full life. Born on January 30, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Dr. Slocum earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa and his Doctor of Medicine from Creighton University. After completing his medical training, he served in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1975 as a flight surgeon during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Commander. He cared deeply for the aviators and service members under his supervision, earning their lasting respect and gratitude. Following his decade of military service, Dr. Slocum made Kingsport, Tennessee, his home-a community he considered his own for the rest of his life. There, he practiced as an ear, nose, and throat surgeon from 1975 until his retirement in 2014. Over nearly forty years, he treated thousands of children and adults across Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Known for his surgical skill and his approachable, accessible manner, Dr. Slocum was deeply devoted to his patients and to the practice of medicine. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Slocum was an avid fisherman who found peace on the water, a fan of college football, and a dog lover whose faithful companions were never far from his side. He is survived by his beloved wife, Constance (Miller) Slocum; children Sandra Jordan (Steve), Rob Slocum, Keith Slocum (Jenna), Grant Gilliam, and Jamie Seshadri (Mukund); and grandchildren Ellie, Richard, Cal, Adler, and Kailash. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jolene Hoffman. A private family service was held on October 20, 2025, in Lexington, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a local animal shelter in his memory. Dr. Slocum will be remembered for his integrity, compassion, and lifelong commitment to family, service, and healing. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched through his care, friendship, and quiet generosity.

Dear Connie and Family. It was an honor and pleasure knowing Carl. We would talk frequently as he walked his dogs on Allison Cove Trail and we would discuss medicine, life values and philosophy. He was a special individual who enjoyed life and it's too bad he became physically limited due to illness. My deepest sympathy. The community is at a loss without Carl's presence , his smile and love of people.
