Carl Lewis Ulich, born in Geneva on May 12,1943, to Carl and Bertha Ulich, was the oldest of the three Ulich brothers, Powell, deceased (Anita) and Robert (Linda). Carl spent part of his youth helping his parents at their Garden Center in northern Medina, performing expert skating, and hunting on land that would become today's housing developments. For the last 50 years, he mostly lived in Lafayette Township, on their 11 ½ acres, feeling blessed each day by his surroundings. As a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, his faith in God and the kindness of others shepherded him through life.
A quiet man with a good heart, Carl enlisted in the Air Force as a teen and was stationed at High Wickham, England, from 1960-1963, serving with base military police. With his love for travel and observation of different cultures, he and Dorothy frequently revisited Great Britain, but local trips on lazy Sunday afternoons provided the same joy and cozy contentment.
He compensated for undiagnosed dyslexia by mastering close reading, a skill that suited his careers in computers and finance. Luckily, he was at the forefront of the computer age, and from huge main frames to PCs, he worked at Case, the University of Maryland, and The University of Akron as administrator of computer security, from which he retired in 2000. In Maryland, he worked for March Planning until 1974, and when Carl moved back to Ohio, he continued finance as a Primerica agent from 1988 -2020, holding licenses in securities and life insurance.
Besides his brother Bob, he leaves behind his wife Dorothy (Dottie), with whom he shared almost 32 years of marriage, and his cherished children from a previous marriage: Carl W. Ulich, Kathy (William, deceased) Beebe, and Connie Ulich. His unconditional love for his grandchildren-Nick Formisano and Emily (John) Eckroth – was mixed with his pride in their careers and personal accomplishments.
Even with dementia and Parkinson's disease, at the end of his life he told Richard Grissom, his Primerica friend, that looking back through the years, he felt he had lived a happy and fulfilling life.
The administration and staff at Brookdale Medina South deserve high praise for their individual attention and compassion both to Carl as a patient as well as to his wife--his advocate, loving partner, and friend who was his regular bearer of the Wall Street Journal, Arizona Green Tea, and storied antics of their pets.
Cremation has taken place; a private military service will be held later at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Since Carl participated for years in helping the homeless through his church, during the upcoming holiday season, please also consider aiding those unfortunate among us through your local place of worship.
