Carlis Mitchell

Carlis Mitchell, age 81, of Mount Pleasant, Texas passed from this life to her Heavenly Home on March 18, 2026 at her residence. She was born on January 29, 1945 in Pittsburg, Texas to James Thomas "J.T." Rust and Marie (Rich) Rust.

Carlis was a member of East New Hope Baptist Church. She enjoyed life's simple pleasures including gardening, cooking, spending time on the patio watching birds and squirrels, reading her Bible, and playing Rummikub with her mother and aunt. She held a variety of jobs including hosting a local TV show "Around Town With Carlis", working at the local Radio Station, driving a school bus, and was the owner of Mitchell's Third Street Cafe. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, J.T. and Marie Rust, Carlis is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, James "Smokey" Mitchell; brother, Doyle Rust, and great-grandchild, Kyra.

Carlis is survived by her loving family: daughter and son-in-law, Gina & Charles Jones of Mount Pleasant, Texas; daughter, Carol Mitchell of Cookville, Texas; and daughter, Jan Oldham of Naples, Texas; grandchildren: Justin Jones; Karley & Jason Schonfeld; Jessica & Brad Moon; Lacyn, Mitchell & Cody Clements; Barrett, Brayden & Kelly Florence; Heather & Chad Evans; and Bently Oldham; 10 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Steve & Suzan Rust of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; sister, Gay Brooks of Dallas, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at the Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home Chapel, with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m., one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at East New Hope Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
