Carol Ann Goodson, 77 passed away on January 31, 2023.
Carol was born in Denver, CO. to Charles and Rita Goodson, growing up in a happy family with seven siblings. Carol attended Denver South High School where she developed an interest and talent in music, which ended up being a lifetime passion and profession.
Carol graduated from Brigham Young University where she studied education. Her first job was as a music teacher in Santa Maria California. After moving to Arizona she taught for several years in the Mesa Arizona public schools. Her passion was teaching and leading choirs. Outside of the school system she had her own choir for children called The Moppets.
She obtained a Masters degree from Northern Arizona University and a doctorate in Music Education from the University of Utah.
After moving from Arizona to Utah she worked as the Fine Arts Education Specialist for the Utah Department of Education and traveled throughout the state to facilitate art education including music, dance, and art. She was a strong proponent for funding of the arts in Utah schools. Carol was inducted into the Utah Music Educators Association’s Hall of Fame for 2015/16, the organization’s highest honor and notably the first time this award was given to a woman.
Carol had a lifelong devotion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served a Spanish-speaking mission in the Washington DC area, and was always busy serving in various positions of leadership and service.
With her interest in family history and genealogy, Carol was a link to relatives living in other states. Carol was the communication hub for the family. She updated family directories and regularly hosted gatherings of nieces and nephews at her home.
We will miss Carol’s enthusiasm for our family and we know her many friends in music and church communities will miss her knowledge, kindness, support and service.
Carol is survived by sisters Charlene, Virginia and Kay and brothers Grant, Ray, Fred and Dan.
Memorial services will be in Salt Lake City and announced at a later date.

Carol Goodson was one of my absolute favorite teachers, of all time. She was the best music teacher. I had her, as my chorus teacher, in ninth grade, at Carson Junior High, in Mesa. I only had the one year with her as my music teacher, but I look back on that year, with great fondness. I´m thankful and honored to have been a student under her.

When thinking of Carol I see a kindred spirit, facilitator and defender of arts education for countless children and educators whom she never met, yet benefitted immensely from what she accomplished in this life! I'm grateful for all I've learned from her over many years of collegiality and personal friendship. Carol loved nature and taking walks with her friends where great conversations ensued about how to better deliver arts instruction and integration to kids while supporting teachers at the same time. She helped many school districts with grant funding, workshop opportunities and leadership training. She helped many of us at the district level, state level, university partnership level and personal levels take our crazy ideas, including hers, and work them into something very meaningful and successful! Her quiet, gentle demeanor spoke loud and clear to our hearts. Carol developed a strong collaborative community of artists and educators where we had a platform to brainstorm, and all ideas were respected and welcomed. Carol was a listener. Many of those ideas were refined and implemented for the benefit of all.
We love you Carol and thank you for the gift of your friendship and leadership!

Carol Ann changed the trajectory of my life and career. She laid a foundation for the arts in Utah that we still get to dance on. Her work was smart, revolutionary and long lasting. I am lucky to have known her and to have worked within the exceptional group of colleagues that she brought together. She was my professional role model, mentor and friend.

Carol was a wonderful colleague! I loved talking about music and participating in school events with her. I loved how she always championed the arts in schools. I enjoyed eating lunch and talking about composers or master choral works. I will miss her.

Carol Ann was a powerful influence in my career pushing me to greater heights and having faith in me as a presenter in her incredible arts gatherings. She was responsible for bringing the arts to so many children in Utah. The angels have a new choir director now.
