Carol "Jo" Hurd, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 10, 2024 in Canistota, South Dakota.
Carol Joan Stone was born on June 17, 1931 in Omaha, Nebraska to William and Carol Stone. She was the second daughter, joining her big sister Jean. Growing up during the depression, she attended many schools in many states as her father moved around to seek employment. She finally ended up in Creston, Iowa where she graduated from high school in 1947 and met her future husband. "Jo" married Melvin Leslie Hurd on May 7, 1950 at Salem Lutheran Church in Creston. To this union a son, Richard Lacy, was born on July 1, 1951 and a daughter, Robin Lynn, was born on September 4, 1954.
"Jo" spent most of her earlier years as a homemaker raising her family and in later years found various jobs in retail stores. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed sewing for her family, especially her granddaughters.
Jo is survived by her daughter, Robin; her grandchildren, Angela, Cynthia (Heath), Amanda (Arlo), Suzanne (Dan) all of South Dakota, William (Carrie) and John (Sara) all of Iowa; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and numerous other family members.
"Jo" was preceded in death by her parents, William and Carol Stone; her husband, Melvin Hurd; her son, Richard Hurd; and her older sister, Jean Gildersleeve. At the time of her passing she was also survived by her younger sister, Donna Rundlett, who has recently passed away.
There will be a graveside service at 10:30 am, Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Ankeny Memorial Gardens, 4208 N Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny, IA with a Celebration of Life service at 11:30 am at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 914 NE Ash Dr., Ankeny, IA. A luncheon will follow at the church afterwards.
