Carol Smith Obituary

Carol Day Smith, 91, of McMurray, PA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 13, 2025. Born in Berwyn, IL, a daughter of the late Theodore and Caroline Habley. Carol graduated from Morton East High School in 1950 and went on to earn her nursing degree from St. Luke's School of Nursing in 1954. She dedicated over four decades to caring for others as an ICU nurse, retiring from Canonsburg General Hospital in 1996. In retirement, Carol and her husband Tom embraced a life of adventure, traveling the world with excitement. Their journeys took them from sailing the British Virgin Islands to exploring Prague, Paris, London, Morocco, and Alaska, among many other destinations. With their welcoming spirits, they somehow always managed to receive invitations to strangers' weddings along the way. Carol was known for her competitive spirit in Old Maid and Crazy 8's, never backing down from a challenge from the grandchildren. As a devoted "Swim Mom," she was a fixture at 5 a.m. carpools, weekend swim meets, and away competitions, cheering on her children with unwavering enthusiasm. Above all, Carol was the heart of her home-a wonderful mother, wife, grandmother, and the ultimate hostess who brought people together for countless memorable gatherings. She was a faithful servant and longtime member of Center Presbyterian Church in McMurray. Carol is survived by her children Brian (Lindae) Day, Lee Ann Sardo, and Brad (Kelly) Day; stepsons Tom Smith and Frank (Amy) Smith; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her brother Tom Habley. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 38 years, Thomas Smith; her brother David Habley; and her sister Georgene Kriz. A memorial service will be held on December 6, 2025 at 10 a.m. at Center Presbyterian Church in McMurray.

Carol was a wonderful and fun nurse to work with. I was a nurse's aid in the icu with her. We had fun down times where we would work to solve the crossword puzzle in the daily notes. She hosted a surprise party for me when I was going to start school. Rest well sweet lady. Beth Lopez

My deepest sympathy to her family. I worked with her at Canonsburg Hospital. She was a fantastic nurse.
One of my favorite memories of her was playing Mrs Claus.
