Carol Whitney Obituary

CAROL SUSAN “SUE” WHITNEY
August 18, 1945 ˜ June 2, 2023

Carol Susan “Sue” Whitney, 77, of Vancouver, WA, passed away peacefully in her home on June 2, 2023.

Sue was born on Aug. 18, 1945, in Vancouver, WA, to John M. Wilson and Mary Ellen (Sparks) Wilson and was the youngest of ten children. She was proud of her American Indian heritage she inherited from her mother. Sue grew up in Amboy, WA, where she enjoyed working in her family’s garage and restaurant. In 1963, she graduated from Battle Ground High School where she met her husband, Gary Whitney. They wed the following December and were married for 51 years until Gary’s death in 2015. They raised four children on their property near the old Whitney family farm.

Over the years, Sue spent countless hours volunteering at school and working for the election board, and later as an active member of the Fargher Lake Grange. She was an exceptional housekeeper and her washing machine was always going. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends. Most of her days involved spending some time reading with a good cup of coffee. Sue had a heart for others and enjoyed visiting with and caring for those who were ailing. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. But of all the things she loved, her grandchildren, whom she and Gary referred to as “The Naughties,” were her greatest joy. All of them looked forward to spending time with her, cooking, watching movies and being spoiled.

Sue is survived by her children, Heidi (Jim) Hobson and Amy (Mike) Buma of Battle Ground, Kathryn (Doug) Denney of La Center, Grant (Amy) Whitney of Vancouver; thirteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Anita Scott of Culdesac, ID. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary; her parents and eight of her siblings. Funeral services will be at Charter Oak Church, 12212 NE 299th St., Battle Ground on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.

I recall a time when my Aunt Sue, who was 6 years younger than me, and I were watching TV at Grandma Wilson's, which is where Sue, age 15, was living. It was a movie of The Three Stooges. At one point they were acting out a scene that was very similar to how our family acted. We laughed so hard those present thought that we had lost it. Obviously I liked her humor. Glad my wife and I were able to have a last visit with Aunt Sue at Uncle Doug's memorial.

Dear Whitney Family,
I am so sad to hear that shes gone.
She told me a story a few years back about my Mom Estella when she used to work at Neils Hardware in Amboy, there was a bad snowstorm & Mom just couldn't make it home to Cedar Creek so Grandma Wilson (thats what we called her when we were little kids) invited Mom to stay with them at the Cafe, they had milkshakes, told stories & had so much fun It really warmed my heart. I appreciated her telling me that story, I always thought that your Mom looked like a cute little doll when I was a kid her pretty smile & those twinkly eyes.
I am so sorry for your loss she was an Angel.

Dear Whitney Family,
Thinking of your fun and hardworking Mom. I pray comfort and courage as you all start this new season without her. She was a dear friend to my sister Karen who has also passed away. Even though I was the younger sister, your Mom always included me.

We grew up in Fargher Lake together and spent time exploring and helping our parents. Maybe that´s where we got our inspiration for helping others. She was always soft spoken and kind. A great role model for all of us!
