Carole Hodgman Obituary

Carole Ellen Hodgman, a devoted wife, mother, educator and community volunteer, peacefully passed away on March 19, 2025, at the age of 80, surrounded by family. A resident of South Haven for over 50 years, Carole made a profound impact on her community through her work as a dedicated educator, her philanthropic contributions and her passion for gardening.

Carole was a loving mother who was always there for her children, offering support, guidance and unconditional love throughout their lives. Her family was her greatest joy and she took pride in nurturing her children and watching them grow into the individuals they are today. Her 59-year marriage to Don was filled with shared adventures, mutual respect and a deep love that defined her life.

She began her teaching career at the Kalamazoo Juvenile Home before spending 33 years teaching in elementary and special education at Bangor Public Schools. Many of her former students remained close to her throughout her life, a testament to the lasting impact she had on those she taught.

Carole will also be remembered for her beautiful gardens on Pearl Street, which became a vibrant part of the community. She shared her love of gardening with others, growing more vegetables and flowers than she needed so she could share with neighbors and friends. Strangers often stopped by to admire her flowers and she was always welcoming, offering tours and flower clippings. Carole believed in living fully and giving generously, always finding beauty in the small things, like a blooming flower or a warm conversation.

In addition to her passion for gardening, Carole was deeply involved in local organizations. She dedicated countless hours to the South Haven Scott Club, the Speaker's Committee, We Care, the Library Board and the South Haven Housing Commission, to name a few. In 2015-16, she was honored with the Community Service Award from the South Haven Rotary, recognizing her selfless giving to local organizations and individuals. Carole often gave anonymously, never seeking recognition for her efforts.

Carole's loyal dog, Marley, was a constant companion by her side, bringing her joy and comfort over the years. Their bond was a source of happiness for Carole and Marley was an ever-present part of her daily life.

Carole earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Western Michigan University, where she met the love of her life, Don. They enjoyed traveling the world together, visiting many countries and experiencing different cultures in their adventures creating memories that Carole cherished.

Carole's legacy of kindness, generosity and love for family and community will continue to inspire those who knew her.

Carole is survived by her loving husband, Don; children: Nichole (Ken) Lewis of Grandville, Mich., and Spencer Hodgman of South Haven; grandchildren: Katelyn (John) DiNunzio of Chicago and Cameron Lewis of Westfield, Ind., and great-grandchild, Charlotte DiNunzio.

A celebration of life will be held at the Michigan Maritime Museum, 260 Dykman Ave., South Haven on Monday, April 7. Visitation will be from 5:30-7 p.m. with the memorial service beginning at 7 p.m.

Carole and I celebrated many years of wonderful friendship and memories when I resided in South Haven. After I relocated to Florida, we saw each other and visited a few times and enjoyed each other's company. Carole and Don were always the most gracious hosts you could ever imagine. We chatted thereafter and filled in our lives coming and going. The years rolled by, but I always knew we would stay friends. She had a wonderful way of making everyone around her feel special. I miss Carole already, but I will never forget her as she made me a better person for knowing her.
