Carolyn Lou Cox

Carolyn Lou Cox, or most affectionately known at "Lou", "Lulabelle", or "Grandmama" by her favorites passed away on July 5th, going out with a bang, and surrounded by those she cherished most. She was 84 years young.

Lou was born on September 29th, 1939, in Washington, Indiana, to her parents Luther and Famie Hughey. She is reunited with both parents as well as her 8 siblings who passed on before her: Richard, Betty, Imogene, Barbara, LaVerne (Tootsie), Jim, Nancy, and Bill. Bruce Hughey, the oldest of all, is still alive in California. Her former son-in-laws were waiting to greet her at Heaven's Gate as well, Bill Standley and Jeff Myers.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Delbert (Gene) Cox. Together and against all odds, they created a family full of love, dysfunction, and sometimes drama; their children, Theresa Standley and Robyn Myers. If you asked Lou who her favorites of the family are, it would be her grandchildren, Erica Narron, Nicki Kutz, Danille Engemann, Famie Cox, Sara Ulch, and Beth LaCroix. She loved and bragged about the 3rd generation grandchildren: Wyatt Ulch, Garret Ulch, Joseph Kutz, Grace Ulch, but nobody could compete with the love she had for her Maverick Cox. She truly cherished her favorite in-laws, Joe Arnsperger, Andy Kutz, and Michale Ulch.

Lou was a fiery soul and a spit fire. She loved reading Debbie Macomber books and watching Walker Texas Ranger and Heartland. She was an avid Indiana Pacers fan and a St. Louis Cardinals fan. You knew whether her team was losing just if there were profanities being thrown out through the house. She loved taking drives, just to get away, or to sneak of to DQ to get an ice cream with Grandpa, and without Famie. Lou was an all-in type of person. When any of the girls moved off to college, she would have grandpa drive 3+ hours just to take one of them out for dinner, or to make sure they had food in the fridge and money to spend. She loved watching Maverick in any sport.

Quality time is the thing the Lou enjoyed the most. Even through the loud, noisiness of us girls laughing, screaming, and just being LOUD: she listened to us from afar in her bed, taking a "nap" to escape the chaos. However, chaos in the form of Maverick and Famie would surely interrupt her plans all of the time. She enjoyed playing card games, though she cheated in most of them, especially Spoons and Uno. She would eventually let us win.

You could always count on her to be there, to talk, to laugh, to cry. She always listened to what you had to say and didn't listen to respond. She listened so you could feel heard. Our world is a little darker, and Heaven is a little brighter with her as an Angel. I bet the Hughey siblings have started a garden, and it has some of the best tomatoes, zucchini, and squash that money couldn't buy. We already miss her more than words could ever express, and actions could ever show, but we know she in is a better place, and we are comforted in that fact.

Visitation for Lou will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, from 11:00am-1:00pm at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home, 2020 State St., Washington, IN 47501. Following the conclusion of visitation, a funeral service will begin promptly at 1:00pm. She will be laid to rest following the service in the New Veale Creek Cemetery in Washington.
