Carolyn Gay Howell, 85, of Hertford, NC, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 23, 2024, from ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville.
Miss Howell was born in Perquimans County on February 25, 1939, and was the daughter of the late Julian Carson and Delsie Mae Whitehead Howell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Betty Howell.
A longtime educator, her teaching career began in Dare County, followed by time in Richmond, VA and finally retiring in 2010 from Perquimans County Schools having served 50 years in education. A faithful member of Whiteville Grove Baptist Church, she loved the Lord and her church family and was devoted in her service to the church as an assistant pianist, choir member, and as clerk, a position she held for 19 years. Spreading God’s word and the work of faith-based charities were very important to her, and she generously supported many Christian organizations through the years.
Surviving is her brother, Julian Willie Howell; a niece, Jennifer H. Creech (Tim); two nephews, Julian S. “J.” Howell (Terese) and Jeffrey R. Howell (April); a great-niece; six great-nephews; and other cousins and extended family members.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, January 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in Whiteville Grove Baptist Church. Friends may visit the family in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service. A private burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a church or charity of one’s choice.
