Caron L. Vernon, 71, of Columbus, and formerly of West Liberty, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, in her Columbus home.
She was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio on May 14, 1953, the daughter of the late Mark Eugene and Martha Louise (Carpenter) Grimes. She was also preceded in death by her dearest friend, Peggy (Jay) Thackery.
She is survived by her partner, Sandy Parker of Columbus; her daughter, Martha (Dan) Petty of Springfield; three grandchildren, Olivia Petty, Caise Petty, and Boden Petty; a sister, Annette (Frank) Morman of Harrod; a brother, Harvey (Carolyn) Grimes of East Liberty; and her nieces and nephews, Alaina (Abbey Smith) Morman, Erin (Thomas) Barber, Teresa (Jeff) Robson, Julianna (Neil) Niemi, and Alonna (Bill) Watkins; many great nieces and nephews; and her loving dog, Sadie
Caron graduated from West Liberty-Salem High School, where she was Salutatorian and then later from Bluffton College with her undergraduate degree in social work, where she was a member of the women’s softball team. She later graduated from The Ohio State University with her master’s degree in social work and remained a faithful Buckeye fan, especially a fan of all of the Lady Buckeye sports and teams. She continued to play softball into her 40’s and was truly a female athlete ahead of her time. She enjoyed attending her family’s music and athletic events. She loved her family, traveling, and traveling with family was her favorite.
She was a longtime social worker and supporter of women’s and children’s rights, working for the Logan County Children Services for 29 years, where she spent 27 years as the Director. She was a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the Public Children’s Services of Ohio. She also was a longtime member of the West Liberty United Church of Christ, where she served as a deaconess.
Rick Petty will officiate a funeral service at 2:00pm on Monday, February 17, 2025, in the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 101 Zanesfield Road, West Liberty, Ohio 43357. Visitation will be two hours prior (12Noon to 2pm) to the services at the funeral home on Monday and burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty, at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Liberty United Church of Christ, 212 Newell St., West Liberty, OH 43357 or the Columbus Humane Society, 3015 Scioto Darby Executive Ct., Hilliard, OH 43026.
