Carrie Lou Dent, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished community member, passed away on October 1, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on November 28, 1936, in Texarkana, Texas, Carrie dedicated her life to nurturing her family and supporting her community in Levelland, Texas.
Carrie Lou Atkins married the love of her life, Sammie Louis Dent Sr., on February 1, 1954, in Hockley County. Together, they raised eight children in Levelland, instilling a strong sense of family and faith in their household. As active members of the Northside Church of Christ, Carrie and Sammie created a loving environment where their children could grow and flourish.
Known affectionately as "Granny" by many, Carrie was a firm believer in the value of education. Throughout her life, she took on roles that reflected her commitment to the youth of her community, working as a school crossing guard and caregiver for children in Levelland. She actively participated in church events, school functions, and athletic events, touching the lives of countless children and families along the way.
Carrie's legacy is carried on by her loving family. She is survived by her daughters, Valerie Dent and Gary Holland of Levelland and Dorothy Dent of Levelland; her sons, Donald and Irma Dent of Levelland, Larry Dent of Farmersville, Curtis Dent and Frances Bean of Brownfield, and Ricky and Terri Dent of Levelland; and her sisters, Ardella Young of Waco, Laverne Howard of Lubbock, Eliza Moore of Happy, and Louise Brackens of Levelland. She is also remembered by her in-laws, Glenda Dent, and Sharon Moreno Smith, James and Wanda Dent of Lubbock, 88 grand, great-grand, and great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and countless kids from surrounding areas to whom she was known as "Granny".
Carrie was preceded in death by her husband, Sammie Dent Sr.; her daughters, Mary Lou Dent and JoAnn Dent; her son, Sammie Dent Jr.; her son, David Earl Dent; her parents, JT and Effie Atkins; her siblings, Arbella, Alma, Joyce, James, Johnny, Leroy, and Lois Atkins, and in-laws Sammie and Earnestine Dent.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Kidney foundation or Alzheimer's Foundation.
A visitation will be held at Krestridge Funeral Home on Sunday October 5, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Carrie's funeral service will be held at the Austin St. Church of Christ in Levelland, Texas, on October 6, 2025, beginning at 1:00 PM. She will be remembered fondly by all who were privileged to know her, and her spirit will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
