Carrie Hardnett Swain

1954 - 2023

Carrie Hardnett Swain, 68, of Locust Grove, died Sunday, February 5, 2023 at Mary Washington Hospital. She was born May 4, 1954 in Virginia to the late Freddie and Ada Hardnett.
Carrie served as an art teacher for Culpeper County Middle School for years and later went into administration for the Spotsylvania County School System where she helped develop and run a program called GLAD. Carrie's life work and legacy were passed through the hundreds of young minds and hearts she touched. She earned her Associate's degree at Northern VA Community College, her Bachelor's degree at the University of Mary Washington, and her Master's degree at George Mason University, and was close to earning her doctorate. She loved being with her family and cherished the joy that her granddaughter, Maya, brought to her life.
She is survived by her daughter, Candace E. Hardnett (Erika); two stepsons, Thomas O. Gray and Frederick D. Gray, III (Perry); four granddaughters, Maya Hardnett, Imanirose Gray, Mariah Majors, and Mika Majors; brother-in-law, Anthony Robinson; and a host of Godchildren, adopted children from the community, cousins, and other family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Carrie is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Wendell Swain; and one sister, Carolyn Hardnett Robinson.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper. The family will receive friends after the service. Carrie's artwork will be available to view.
