Catherine "Cathy" (Calderone) Basso

We think of Cathy often. Her grace and gentleness remind us of both Cathy´s mom and Bob´s mom

I was incredibly fortunate to know the Basso family growing up in Battle Creek and worked at Palermo's during college. During that time I felt such a part of this amazing family and left with lifelong lessons and memories. Mrs. Basso was truly special and the epitome of love and warmth. She leaves her legacy through her family and people she touched. Sending so much love to you all!

She was a beautiful woman whom I had the privilege of knowing for the time I had. Palermo's was my favorite restaurant growing up & have fond memories celebrating birthdays & other holidays & celebrations there. Thank you so much for those memories.

Dear Basso Family, Our deep sympathy on the passing of your mother. Cathy and I met at St. Joseph School as my son David and Angie shared the same grade. Cathy's warmth and generosity of spirit gave me encouragement and strength. She always had a smile and a laugh to share. Her love and kindness continue through all of her children and, I am sure, her grandchildren. What a beautiful bouquet she has in heaven of all your faces and your love. My parents (Wayne and Becky) and I had many happy memories at Palermo´s with their Navy friends. Cathy always made me feel so special when she showed me the kitchen and let me use the soda machine and sweeper. She was so kind and warm! Thinking of Tom and the Basso family, I´m so sorry for your loss.

My late husband and I enjoyed many happy meals at the "Palermo" restaurant. We were weekly patrons, because the food was so good. My condolences to the Basso family.

My heart goes out to the Basso family, she will definitely be missed. When i use to deliver to there restaurant, they would always make sure i would take lunch with me. Thom. Love you both.

Cathy was a classmate at Nazareth College of Kalamazoo. Over several years as alums, some of us gathered at the Palermo for the good food, friendships, and true story-telling. Cathy would join us as she could. There was laughter, oh, the laughter while recalling and sharing college experiences at Naz. The memories are dear.

Sorry to hear about Cathy, she was a beautiful person, inside and out, she would always have a smile, which was sometimes difficult, dealing with Tom and my shenanigans. She will be dearly missed.

Tom and Family-- Our hearts are so saddened at the passing of Cathy. We knew her for many years and always loved our times at Palermo when we could talk about our Italian heritage, our families, and all that we enjoyed talking about. You dont know how much I will miss my friend Cathy, I could always depend on her when ever I was down, she just seem to know and she would call. I thank God for the friendship we had, love you friend

The Basso family were ones of the first people we met when we moved to Battle Creek in 1974. They were so generous and our children had new friends almost immediately. Cathy was always available with help and advice, as was her mother whom I know. Our shared sadness and blessings to all the family from ours.

I worked at Riverside Swim club and Cathy would take her children there and we visited often. She taught me how to make ribs! She was so kind and loved her family so very much!

Cathy's husband Tom was an upperclassman who was like a hero to me. Why am I not surprised he met this wonderful woman and made a remarkable life. RIP.

I worked for the basso family at Palermo while I was attending college.
It wasn´t so much like working because of the warm and caring family that I was surrounded by. It felt like I was "at home " when I got to work.
I remember Mrs Basso always bringing me fresh bread with butter in the morning to have with my coffee when I would be opening for lunch. It literally just came out of the oven and was still warm.
She took such pride in every single detail of her meals she prepared. Her attitude overflowed to all of us that worked for the Bassos. She always made me want to do the best job I could. Her recipes were Devine and everything was made to order. I always remember the time that Kelly, Angie and I waited on a special event for Mrs Bassos brother , Tony and his old school friends. The song "Glory Days " by Bruce Springsteen played on repeat ALL NIGHT LONG. I can still hear Angie saying " oh my god this song !!"
Lots of laughs, good talks and always a hug.
Mrs Basso was like a Mom to all of her employees. Always making sure everyone was taken care of.
She always had a smile on her face. She always modified her tshirts to little cap sleeves. Every. Single. One. I remember her birks.
Her silver curls. The sparkle in her eyes. I feel lucky to have known such a special lady. So many good memories. My love to you all. I know she lives on in all of you.
