Catherine L. "Katie" Simon, on Monday, Dec. 8, 2025, Catherine L. "Katie" Simon, 91, passed away peacefully at home in Lower Burrell. Born April 14, 1934, in New Alexandria, Katie was the daughter of the late Alfonso Loyacono and Frances Gagliuzzi Loyacono. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church, Lower Burrell, where she was an active member in her younger years. Having worked at the former Bell Telephone Company in Greensburg, her lifelong and most cherished occupation was that of wife and mother. Not only did she enjoy preparing Italian meals for family and friends, but she also learned the art of Middle Eastern cooking, where many savored her stuffed grape leaves, kibbeh, and roasted lamb. There wasn't a romance novel that Katie hadn't read and passed along, with stacks of others waiting bedside for her nightly reading ritual. Up until her 90th birthday, she belonged to and participated in a local bowling league and a card club comprised of good friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, George J. Simon; sisters, Mary McKelvey and Caterina Loyacono, who died tragically as a young child and was Katie's namesake; brothers, Sam and Patsy Loyacono; brother-in-law, John "Jack" McKelvey; and nephews, Alvin McKelvey, James Morrison, and Matthew, Dennis, and Mark Sobecki. She is survived by her son, John M. Simon, Lower Burrell; son, George Scott Simon, and wife, Linda, Greensburg; daughter, Kathleen Bush, and husband, Kerry, Upper Burrell; grandchildren, Lauren Simon, Lower Burrell, Kelsey Simon, Youngstown, OH, Resa Bush Hayes and husband, Kirk, Brookville, and Cole Bush and wife, Jaime, Pittsburgh; great-grandchildren, Carson Titmus, Huck Hayes, Harper Hayes, and Brody Bush; nieces, Patsy Morrison and Pam Naviglia and husband, Louis; former daughter-in-law, Robin Simon; and close friends, Frances Zanotti and Chubb Shank. Private funeral arrangements entrusted to RUSIEWICZ FUNERAL HOME, 3124 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, at St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church. Interment at Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
