He was my XO & CO aboard USS PATRIOT (MCM7). He was a great XO and great CO, very humble and loved helping us engineers he had a box of treasures as he called it every casualty we had he kept a small part of it. He did in fact great his people with a head butt . His sea chanties for sea and anchor songs will always be remembered as well as his positive humbleness. Rest Easy we have the watch! you will be missed by many.

I was stationed at NPS as an MC and worked with Lt. At the time. He was always a good spirit and quick to help out. He once got me out of trouble and vouched for me. He was just a good man. May he rest well and may his family find solace.

We are so sorry for your loss and empathize with your feelings during this challenging time. We knew Jon through our neighbors in Fairfax and meeting his parents. Our friendship genuinely relates our concern and care for the family and friends. We will pray for Jon and family/friends and trust in the Holy Spirit to give them strength knowing his eternal memorial is in the context of love.

My first memory? Well at least the first real memory was just how amazing he was as an officer. He used to go around head butting his crew as a hello haha. He also cared about his sailors well being. Gonna miss you WEPS. Rest easy, and we have the watch.

My deepest sympathies to Kaori-san, Bruno, Nino and Mr & Mrs Volkle.
I met John when I started working at Destroyer Squadron 15 to coordinate US-Japan relations.
The entire Japan Maritime Self Defense Force greatly respected John. They respected John not only because of his Japanese fluency but because he understood their perspective and was able to accurately voice their opinion to the US Navy. Language is a difficult skill to obtain, but it takes a great level of compassion to be able to speak like John.
Not only did he inspire me, but he inspired an entire organization.
John is without a doubt the most trusted US Naval Officer by the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and did more for US-Japan relations than any US military officer in the last 70 years of the alliance.
Thank you John, for showing us the way. We will carry the torch you gave us.
Rest in Peace. Yuma Kuwata

Our deepest sympathies to Kaori, Bruno, Nino and Mr & Mrs Volkle on your massive loss.
Jon was a great mate of mine in Japan when he was teaching in Tateyama. He would drive 40 minutes to pick me up in his Suzuki Swift, with his knees around his chin and surf board half out the back window. We had such a laugh telling jokes and talking about life. Jon was an inspirational person who gave everyone confidence which was a pointer to his future career as a professional leader. Lots of love Jon, miss you buddy.
