He was born in Habersham County in Clarkesville, GA. His mother was Maybell Grooms (Kirby) and his father was Cecil William Grooms. He lived in Hiawassee, GA. He was a Vietnam War Veteran who was drafted into the army at a young age during high school. He was honorably discharged from Fort Ritchie Maryland in 1978 after serving as a SP4 572 D Military Police. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and horses, fishing, hunting, and his grandchildren.

He was one of 5 siblings; Betty Grooms Woolums, Barbara Grooms, Dottie Kelley, and Nancy Huffman. He is survived by his children; Verranne Grooms (daughter) and David Dockery (son in law), Dawn Bailey (daughter) and Jeff Bailey (son in law), his son Dakota Grooms, and daughter Lori Giddens with husband Wallace Giddens. His grandchildren; Ethan McLain, Dalton McLain, Indianna Grooms, Cameron Grooms, Kadence Bailey, Eleanor Bailey, Staton Grooms, and Quincey Grooms. His great grandchildren: Jameson McLain and Zara McLain.

His pallbearers which are his nephews include Barry Huffman, Brian Kelley, Danny Moody, Delane Moody, Neal Moss, and Eddie Carroll.

Visitation: Saturday, July 5, 2025 5:00-7:00PM at Banister-Cooper Funeral Home

Funeral: Sunday, July 6, 2025 at 3:00PM at Banister-Cooper Funeral Home with Brent Penland officiating
