Obituary published on Legacy.com by Phillips Funeral Home - Corning on Oct. 25, 2025.
The world lost one of the great ones on December 26, 2024. Cedric was the epitome of what God created a man to be. A devoted Christian, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and civil servant. The list is endless. Family was everything to him. Being a good neighbor, human being, and friend who always believed in doing the right thing were woven into the fabric of his body and soul. His storytelling and sense of humor were unmatched. The world was able to share his life for 94 years. Sadly, it was not enough for his family.
Cedric C. Stewart was born on September 5, 1930 in Monterey, NY to Charles and Lela Dewitt Stewart. They predeceased him. Cedric attended the local one room school house in Monterey before going to Painted Post High School. He graduated in 1947 at the young age of 16.
Following graduation he worked as a teller for one year at Corning First National Bank. Cedric then began his life long career at Ingersol Rand / Dresser Rand. Cedric was employed there from 1948 until his retirement as a Senior Systems Analyst in December 1993. During his years there, he was a member of the Service Association. He was President and later, treasurer of that organization for several years.
Cedric met his late wife, Nellie on September 20, 1952 at a round and square dance at the old Cheese Factory in East Campbell. Their courtship was short and sweet. They shared a love of dancing their entire lives. They were married June 20, 1953 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Corning. It was a long loving marriage during which time they traveled extensively. Among their favorite adventures were cruises they took to Alaska, New England, Nova Scotia, the Caribbean, and the Panama Canal. Their marriage lasted 56 years until Nellies death February 25, 2010.
Cedric is survived by his four children: Ruth Ann Hanlin of Horseheads, NY; Barbara Stewart (Chris) of Charlotte, NC; Kenneth Stewart (Teri) of Charlotte, NC and Kevin Stewart of Santa Fe, TX. He was the proud grandfather of: Jamie Nagle (Brian) of Huntersville, NC; Brooke Hanlin (Chris) of Gastonia, NC; Courtney and Cameron Barnard of Charlotte, NC; Ashley Howard (Aaron) and KC Stewart of Santa Fe, TX; Payton Stewart of Webster, TX.
Cedric is also survived by seven great- grandchildren: Austin, Anthony, Finley, Ayden, Hunter, JoJo, and Oaklynn.
Cedric was active in his hometown of Monterey. He was a long standing member of the Monterey Volunteer Fire Department where he served as treasurer for several years. He was also a member of the Bradford Central Schoolboard for 9 years. He and Nellie were involved in the many school/sports activities of their four children and two granddaughters.
Cedric served the Town of Orange as a town council member as well as Town Supervisor. During his tenure as supervisor he guided the town in rebuilding of the Highway Department after it was destroyed by fire in March 2001.
