Chambres Ray Vandevender

Chambres Ray Vandevender, age 78 years, a resident of Valley Head, WV departed this life late Monday evening, October 6, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of WV Caring. He had been in declining health.
He was born Monday, March 17, 1947 at home in Monterville, WV a son of the late Elvin Chambres Vandevender and Nessie May Arbogast Vandevender. On January 25, 1969, at Monterey, VA he was married to the former Ada Colleen Roberts, who survives. Also surviving are one son, James Ray "Jimmy" Vandevender and wife Shaina of Monterville; two daughters, Lora Beth Vandevender of Monterville, and Amy Jo Vandevender of Valley Head; one brother, Richard Lee Vandevender and wife Doris of Hillsboro; five sisters, Dorothy Jean Bennett of Craigsville, Frances Peters, Rosalee Gail Noel, both of Cleveland, OH, Linda Kay Bennett and husband Steve of Moatsville, and Susan Louise Vandevender of Monterville; four grandchildren, Brittany Gibson of Monterville, Victoria Vandevender of VA, Alex Vandevender of Monterville, and Chelsy Hinkle of Beckley; four great grandchildren, Asher Stancil, Carter Dilley, Maverick Hinkle, and Maddox Hinkle; a brother in law, Richard Jordan of Marlinton; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are one sister, Elva May Jordan.
He attended the schools of Monterville and Tygarts Valley High School and was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during the Vietnam War as a tank operator. He had worked at various coal mines in the area, as a ski lift operator at Snowshoe Mountain Resort and was a licensed journeyman electrician.
Mr. Vandevender assisted in the building of the Raven Golf Course and was involved in the blasting of dynamite during the construction of several ski runs at Snowshoe Mountain Resort. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed ginsenging, hunting and fishing and loved riding his motorcycle.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Tuesday, October 14, 2025. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1:00 PM. Pastor Johnny Williams will officiate, and interment will follow at the Swecker Cemetery at Brady Gate, where the WV National Guard Honor Guard Program, the H. W. Daniel's Post # 29, American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors.
