Our beloved sister, Charlene Chesnut, passed away at the age of 84, on Saturday evening, November 1,2025. Charlene was born on September 16, 1941, in Houston, Texas.
Charlene is preceded by her father David Chesnut and mother Lucille Chesnut of Conroe, Texas. She generously cared for her mother for the last few years of her life. She is survived by her only brother James David Chesnut whom she lived with for the last six weeks of her life before going on to be with the Lord. She was a devoted Catholic. She was a generous woman not only with her family but with various charities and friends. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Pat Chesnut, her niece Carrie Giles (husband Luke Giles) and her nephew David Chesnut (wife Shanda Chesnut) along with her great nephew Noah Chesnut, and great niece Elliot Chesnut.
Char was a very independent woman all her life. Having been born and raised in the Houston Heights, she would talk with anyone about the Heights. She attended Reagan High School graduating in 1957. She achieved her bachelor's degree and her master's degree at the University of Houston where her thesis was about Medieval literature and iconography.
Charlene's lifework was as a medical transcriptionist as well as some teaching. She had a lifelong interest in many subjects both in the arts and sciences. She loved literature and reading and learning about her family's history.
With that in mind, it is not surprising that in 2014 after years of research, Charlene published Eleanor's Book. Dr. Eleanor Chesnut was a missionary in the health care field in China most of her life. It is such a loving tribute to Dr. Chesnut who devoted her life's missionary services in the latter half of the 19th century.
During her younger years she had the pleasure of sharing traditional family reunions at the Young homeplace near Conroe, Texas, enjoying time with all aunts, uncles and cousins.
She also loved traveling down to Galveston, usually with her mom and her niece. Her passion was for visiting old homes and churches. She was also an avid reader owning many books. During the final years of her life, you could find her out searching for hidden treasures in thrift shops.
Funeral services will be held at the graveside on November 14, 2025, at 11 am. She will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Garden of Memories, 1101 Antoine Dr., Houston, TX, 77055.

My condolences to Charlene's family and friends. My earliest and lifelong memories include Char and her family as her mother and my dad were siblings. I have a photo somewhere of Aunt Lucille, Charlene, and I walking up the sidewalk to my grandmother's home when I was about three years old. Some years later, my family and I attended Charlene's wedding. I will always remember her soft voice, her beautiful open, full of happiness smile. These memories I will cherish forever!
